Martina Navratilova lashes out at Donald Trump-nominee Matt Gaetz potentially becoming attorney general despite sex trafficking investigation
Martina Navratilova launched a scathing attack aimed at Matt Gaetz, the Donald Trump-backed attorney general nominee. Navratilova's attack stemmed from the 2020 sex trafficking accusations on Gaetz, which remain unresolved to this day.
On Wednesday, November 13, Donald Trump confirmed that he would be nominating Matt Gaetz to serve as the attorney general of the United States. At the time, Gaetz was a member of the House of Representatives, but the 42-year-old handed in his resignation shortly after the President-elect's announcement.
It was a controversial development owing to the 2020 accusations on Gaetz, which revolved around his alleged involvement in sex trafficking and having physically intimate relationships with minors. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) launched an investigation back then but ultimately decided to steer clear of formally charging the lawyer-turned-politician.
The House of Representatives' House Ethics Committee also investigated the accusations, but the investigation has now seemingly ended following Gaetz's resignation. Recently, CNN reporter Jamie Gangel said that the DOJ's career lawyers and federal prosecutors, along with Senate Republicans, have not taken kindly to Gaetz being nominated by Trump for the attorney general position.
Martina Navratilova, a former World No. 1 and an 18-time Grand Slam singles champion, who is also a fierce critic of Trump and the Republicans, took to X (formerly Twitter) to lambast the nomination. Navratilova cited the unresolved allegations against Gaetz and suggested that he is not fit to be an attorney general.
"The guy who trafficked underage girls and had sex with them will be now in charge of going after pedophiles? Good to know…," Martina Navratilova wrote.
Navratilova recently agreed with the suggestion that American oligarchs were responsible for Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 US presidential election.
Martina Navratilova delivered a one-word reaction to 'American oligarchy' suggestion behind Donald Trump's success
A political commentator recently took to X to suggest that American oligarchs were at the root of Donald Trump winning the 2024 US presidential election. Elon Musk was one of the most prominent businessmen who backed Trump to succeed. Musk even appeared at several Trump rallies.
Martina Navratilova agreed with the suggestion, and reacted to it with just one word.
"BINGO!!!" Navratilova wrote on X.
Navratilova herself was thoroughly disappointed after it became clear that Donald Trump would serve as US President for a second term. The Czech-American had firmly backed Kamala Harris to succeed, and after the results surfaced, she claimed that "fear and anger" had come out on top.
