Martina Navratilova pokes fun at Donald Trump after former US President reportedly shies away from further debates with Kamala Harris
Martina Navratilova has yet again taken a swipe at former US President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. This time around, Navratilova took a dig at Trump for reportedly shying away from further presidential debates with his political rival Kamala Harris, the presidential candidate fielded by the Democrats.
Trump and Harris squared off in their first presidential debate since the latter replaced Joe Biden as the Democrats' presidential candidate, on Tuesday, September 10. The debate didn't see an out-and-out winner, but Harris seemingly did have the edge. Time and again, the reigning US Vice President attempted to get under Trump's skin.
While the 45th US President tried to put up a defiant fight, he often ended up undermining his efforts and resorting to making unsubstantiated claims. For instance, in a bid to point out the negatives in the Democrats' stance towards immigration, Trump claimed that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, eat dogs and cats.
Recently, lawyer and legal commentator Tristan Snell took to X (formerly Twitter) and reported that Trump does not intend to feature in any more presidential debates with Harris. Snell added that Harris' performance on the political rivals' ABC debate had put fear in the former US President's mind.
Martina Navratilova, a former WTA World No. 1 in both singles and doubles tennis, shared Snell's post and used seven chicken emojis in her caption, a possible reference to Trump's perceived lack of courage.
A staunch critic of Trump, Martina Navratilova recently promoted pop icon Taylor Swift endorsing Harris' bid for presidency. Navratilova was not the only prominent name in tennis to promote Swift's endorsement of Harris, as former ATP World No. 1 Andy Roddick echoed her sentiments.
Martina Navratilova and Andy Roddick have backed pop icon Taylor Swift's decision to vote for Kamala Harris
Shortly after Donald Trump and Kamala Harris' ABC presidential debate came to an end, Taylor Swift publicly announced via an Instagram post that she would be voting for Kamala Harris in the upcoming US presidential elections.
"I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos," read part of Swift's announcement on Instagram.
Martina Navratilova and Andy Roddick soon poured in with their support for Swift over her decision.
"Yippee:), Taylor just made Donold’s awful night even worse:)," Navratilova wrote on X.
"She signed the endorsement Childless Cat Lady ………. [microphone emoji] fell all the way down," Roddick chimed in.
The 'Childless Cat Lady' phrase was used by Swift to sign her announcement. It was an apparent dig at Trump's running mate JD Vance's 2021 claim of Democrats promoting a seemingly 'antifamily' stance under the leadership of a 'bunch of childless cat ladies'.
