Mirra Andreeva takes sneaky picture of Andy Murray at French Open 2024, jokes about 'fan' meeting with Bjorn Borg
17-year-old Mirra Andreeva completed a dream run at the 2024 French Open by reaching the semifinal. She played against some of the top players and met her idol Andy Murray and tennis legend Bjorn Borg.
Andreeva began the tournament as an unseeded youngster against American player Emina Bektas in the first round. She won the match in straight sets and was up against 19th seed Victoria Azarenka next. The Russian dropped a set in that match but got the better of the Belarusian.
Andreeva defeated Peyton Stearns and Varvara Gracheva in the next rounds before meeting Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinal.
The second seed was in phenomenal form before stepping into the last-eight encounter. She had not lost a set in Grand Slam matches in 2024 and was 8-0 up in the Majors quarterfinals. However, the young Russian rose to the challenge and got the better of one of the favorites of the tournament 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4.
In the semifinal, she faced a fellow first-time Grand Slam semifinalist in a singles event, Jasmine Paolini. Andreeva was outclassed by the Italian 6-3, 6-1, thus ending her fairytale run in what was only her fifth main draw appearance in a Grand Slam.
After facing defeat in the semifinal, the youngster posted a recap of her run in the Paris Slam. She posted 10 images, with one being a sneaky selfie she clicked with Murray in the background.
Moreover, she even took to her Instagram Story to share a picture she clicked with Bjorn Borg. The Swedish tennis legend is a six-time French Open winner. She jokingly captioned the image:
"A quick picture with a fan :)"
"Maybe I could have done better" - Mirra Andreeva opens up on battling negative thoughts after French Open 2024
Following her French Open exit, Mirra Andreeva revealed that she had a lot of negative thoughts after losing. Speaking in the press conference after the match, Andreeva said that it is tough to immediately start thinking positively again after a loss.
"Maybe I could have done better here, but overall it was a good tournament. So I think for now we'll just need a couple of days to just wait until the negative thoughts will go away and I can clearly see the situation and then to make some conclusions out of this trip. And that's it."
Andreeva also revealed that she would stay in bed and sleep 12 hours at a stretch to cope with the disappointment of losing.
