"Most memorable weeks"- Andy Murray pens emotional message reminiscing on his Olympics glory, confirms Paris 2024 as the final event before retirement
Former World No. 1 Andy Murray reiterated his decision to retire from the game after the 2024 Paris Olympics on Tuesday. The 37-year-old is considered one of the greatest British athletes ever, with three Grand Slam titles and three Olympic medals to his name.
Murray famously ended Britain's 77-year wait for a homegrown Wimbledon champion by defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets during the finals in 2013. He repeated this feat by clinching his second Wimbledon title in 2016 to solidify his place among the game's greats.
Murray wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"Arrived in Paris for my last ever tennis tournament @Olympics. Competing for (Britain) has been by far the most memorable weeks of my career and I’m extremely proud to get do it one final time!"
The Brit also bid an emotional farewell at Wimbledon earlier this month as he withdrew from the singles competition after undergoing a spinal cyst surgery. His final appearance on Centre Court came in the men's doubles alongside his brother Jamie.
During the post-match presentation, a teary Murray addressed the crowd on his departure.
"It is hard because i want to keep playing, but i can't. Physically it's too tough now. I want to play forever, I love the sport," he said.
Murray will be aiming to add more medals to his Olympic haul in his final appearance in Paris.
