“My mom has videos of me, I've always liked photoshoots” - Aryna Sabalenka on her innate knack for posing in front of cameras
Aryna Sabalenka recently opened up about her seeming knack for striking poses in front of cameras. She revealed that this behavior has been a part of her since childhood with her mother, Yulia, having a collection of videos capturing her posing moments.
Sabalenka is currently in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the 2024 WTA Finals, marking her fourth appearance at the event. The season-ending tournament commenced on November 2 and will run until November 9, 2024. The World No. 1 was drawn in the Purple group alongside Elena Rybakina, Zheng Qinwen, and Jasmine Paolini.
Sabalenka kicked off her WTA Finals campaign by defeating Zheng 6-3, 6-4 in her first group stage match. She then secured a victory over Paolini with a score of 6-3, 7-5 and secured her place in the semifinals of the tournament. The Belarusian will next face Rybakina in the third group stage match.
In a post-match press conference, Sabalenka was asked about her being so comfortable in front of a camera. In response, the Belarusian shared that her fondness for posing in front of the camera dates back to her childhood. She revealed that she has always liked to do "cool photo shoots" and that her mother, Yulia, has preserved numerous videos of her posing moments from her early years.
“I don’t know. I mean my mom has a lot of videos of me when I was a kid actually. I would love to go back and go through all of them because it’s a lot of fun watching me doing crazy stuff. Actually nothing has changed now, it's the same but different you know. I have always liked to do some cool photo shoots, to pose in front of the camera,” Aryna Sabalenka said.
Aryna Sabalenka explained that her love for posing stems from her desire to see herself from a "different view." She expressed that after intense matches on the court, where she is "sweaty" and "aggressive," she appreciates the opportunity to present herself in a more elegant and composed manner during photoshoots.
“I like to see myself from a different view because on the court we are sweaty, we always look aggressive, we don’t care about the way we’re looking and then like when you get ready for some sort of photo shoot, it is like you always look beautiful. And then you look at yourself and think, ‘Okay, I’m not that bad. I actually look good,’” she added.
Aryna Sabalenka will face Elena Rybakina in her last group stage match at WTA Finals 2024
Aryna Sabalenka will take on Elena Rybakina in her final group stage match at the 2024 WTA Finals.
Rybakina had a rough start to her season-ending tournament, suffering defeats in her first two group stage matches. She was bested by Jasmine Paolini 6-7(5), 4-6 in the opening match followed by a loss to Zheng Qinwen 6-7(4), 6-3, 1-6 in the second match. These losses dashed her hopes of contending for the title.
Sabalenka and Rybakina have met on the WTA tour nine times, with the World No. 1 emerging victorious in six of their previous nine encounters. Their most recent showdown occurred in the semifinals of the 2024 Madrid Open where Sabalenka triumphed 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(5).
