Nick Kyrgios brags about being 'good for the game' after Paul McNamee questions Aussie's 'underrated' tennis brain in commentary
Nick Kyrgios responded to Paul McNamee's assessment of his 'media role'. The former Australian player stated that Kyrgios has an 'underrated' tennis brain and worried it might be detrimental to his on-court game. However, the 29-year-old bragged about being good both on and off the court.
Since the end of the 2022 season, Kyrgios has played only one professional match. He has suffered from multiple injuries during this period, keeping him away from the on-court action. However, the Aussie found a way to stay close to the courts by taking media roles.
Kyrgios was a guest commentator at the Australian Open and reprised his role at Wimbledon. At the recently concluded US Open, the 29-year-old was heavily involved as a commentator and a reporter.
His compatriot and former doubles world No. 1 McNamee assessed Kyrgios' role in the media and wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"My take on Nick Kyrgios media roles..his occasional dark humour can certainly offend, but he’s there for one reason…his high level insights. The guy has an underrated tennis brain, if anything too astute for his own good because, as a player, I wonder if he over relies on it?"
Kyrgios reposted it with a caption that read:
"I’m good for the game period. On and off the court."
Nick Kyrgios defends his spot as an 'expert' for ESPN at the US Open 2024
Nick Kyrgios' advanced role as a reporter for ESPN at the 2024 US Open was one of the talking points of the event. Fans had their vivid opinions about the Aussie's work. However, his comments about Jannik Sinner's girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya did not go down well with fans as many questioned if he should be allowed to continue as a reporter.
A fan on X had posted an image of Kyrgios and Kalinskaya, who used to date in 2020, and the Aussie responded to the post, writing:
"Second serve"
Kyrgios' remark was seemingly derogatory and he took it down soon after. However, one fan reposted his comment and wrote:
"This is the expert that ESPN have for the US Open btw."
The Aussie defended himself and wrote:
"Yep, one of handful of players that have beaten all the greatest players - and I enjoy watching and breaking down the WTA tour as well 🙂 excited for the finals 🤩"
Meanwhile, another fan complimented the 2022 Wimbledon finalist for his work at the US Open. Kyrgios reposted and agreed with it.
