Nick Kyrgios pulls off double shift in Houston, books first quarterfinal berth on clay in four years
Nick Kyrgios defeated Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-2 in Houston on Wednesday to advance to his first quarterfinal on clay in four years. The Australian returned a few hours later alongside Jack Sock and secured a 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 victory against Andre Goransson and Nathaniel Lammons in the doubles event.
Kyrgios saved all six break points he faced against the former Roland Garros junior champion to advance to the last eight on the red dirt for the first time since 2018.

The Australian wildcard, who is competing on clay for the first time since 2019, had shown no signs of rust in his first-round match against Mackenzie McDonald either, defeating the American 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The World No. 94 continued his dominance against Tommy Paul, firing 10 aces and winning 88 percent of his first-serve points to dispatch the seventh seed.
"I had to be locked in today and I knew that I had to serve well. It's probably one of the better matches I've played on clay in my career, so I'm pretty happy with the way I came out here today. Just put my head down and went to work," said Nick Kyrgios in his on-court interview.

Kyrgios also advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles event partnering with Jack Sock after the duo saw off a stern challenge from the unseeded Goransson and Lammons.

Kyrgios has enjoyed success in doubles this year, winning his first Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open, partnering with close friend and compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.
They continued their pairing in Indian Wells and Miami where they made it to the round of 16 and semifinals, respectively.

Nick Kyrgios will face lucky loser Michael Mmoh in the last 8 in Houston
Lucky loser Michael Mmoh stunned World No. 114 Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-4 to advance to his third career quarterfinal.
Mmoh won 78 percent of his first-serve points and saved the lone break point he faced while converting three of the 10 chances he earned.

The 24-year-old American, who is ranked 112 spots lower than two-time Houston finalist Querrey, will take on the surging Kyrgios in the quarterfinals.

Mmoh replaced Miami Open finalist and top seed Casper Ruud in the draw after the Norwegian withdrew due to wisdom tooth pain.
