Nick Kyrgios jokes about playing time at the 2023 Laver Cup after being in contention for selection to represent Team World

Nick Kyrgios is in contention to be selected in Team World's squad for the 2023 Laver Cup.

The top three players for Team Europe and Team World, according to the ATP rankings released on July 17, 2023, the Monday after Wimbledon, receive an automatic invitation to the Laver Cup.

Kyrgios is currently ranked 19th in the world, which is fourth among players who are eligible to represent the team captained by John McEnroe.

The Laver Cup' s Instagram page shared an image of the Top 5 rankings among players eligible to represent Team Europe and Team World. While their post was intended to congratulate Novak Djokovic on reaching a record 378th week as World No. 1, Nick Kyrgios shared it on his Instagram story and captioned it:

"I think I play the least definitely."

Kyrgios has been a regular at the Laver Cup, representing Team World in each of the first four editions of the tournament. The Aussie had a 1-2 record in the 2017 edition, beating Tomas Berdych and losing to Roger Federer. He also lost his doubles fixture against Berdych and Rafael Nadal, with Jack Sock as his partner.

In 2018, Kyrgios lost both of his singles matches to Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but won his doubles clash against Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin while partnering Jack Sock.

The Aussie-American duo were victorious again at the 2019 Laver Cup as they beat Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Kyrgios, however, lost his singles match against Roger Federer.

The 2021 Laver Cup was a disappointing one for the Aussie as he lost both of his matches.

Nick Kyrgios looked to start his 2023 season at the Indian Wells Masters but eventually pulled out of the event, as well as the Miami Masters. The Aussie underwent knee surgery during January, missing the Australian Open, and it might be a while before we see him back in action.

Kyrgios produced some impressive performances last season, most notably reaching the Wimbledon final. The 27-year-old's exploits saw him return to the top 20 of the ATP rankings.

He is currently ranked 19th in the world but could suffer a drop as he will be unable to defend the 270 points he earned from the Indian Wells and Miami Masters last season.
