Novak Djokovic's ex-coach Boris Becker taken aback by Serb's fitness in blockbuster win against Carlos Alcaraz at Australian Open
Boris Becker commented on Novak Djokovic's incredible fitness during his quarterfinal win over Carlos Alcaraz at the 2025 Australian Open. The German, who shares a long history with the Serb as his former coach, admitted he was amazed by his ex-protege’s performance.
Despite being a 10-time Australian Open champion, Djokovic entered the match against Alcaraz as the underdog. However, he proved he still possesses the grit and resilience needed as he sets his sights on a record-breaking 25th Major, surpassing Margaret Court's record.
Djokovic overcame his young Spanish opponent with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory after three hours and 37 minutes of intense action on Rod Laver Arena. What stood out most, however, was his remarkable physical ability, which took Becker by surprise, as he revealed during a conversation with Andrea Petkovic on the Becker Petkovic podcast.
“Before the match, I thought [Carlos] Alcaraz was the favorite,” Becker said. “He even won the first set. Novak got treatment, and suddenly, a side of Novak emerged that we all know but didn't believe he still had."
“He is 37 years old. At that age, you usually don't get fitter, faster, or better. Especially in long matches, it becomes an issue. But as the match went on, Novak kept getting stronger and Carlos couldn't keep up. That's simply a quality that's unmatched and that's also a reason that he has won 24 Grand Slams,” he added.
Novak Djokovic to take on Alexander Zverev in Australian Open 2025 SF
Novak Djokovic is set to face longtime rival Alexander Zverev in the semifinals of the 2025 Australian Open on Friday, January 24. Zverev enters the clash after impressive wins over Tommy Paul, Ugo Humbert, and others.
Djokovic teased fans about a "secret" agreement with Zverev during his on-court interview after defeating Carlos Alcaraz. He said jokingly:
“We have an agreement as long as I play he's going to let me win Grand Slam matches."
The Serb went on to praise the German, calling him a formidable opponent who is currently playing some of his best tennis. He added that he would need to put in extra effort to secure a win.
"I guess the key is recovery for me now, you know to be honest that's all I'm thinking about. The extra day with no match comes at the perfect time for me, let's see if it's going to be good enough on Friday. Hopefully, I can come out and feel my best you know Sascha is playing some of the best tennis he has played,” Djokovic said.
The duo have faced each other 12 times before, with the 24-time Major champion leading their head-to-head record 8-4.
