"Now I don't care, I want to try crazy things" - Marta Kostyuk opens up about the evolution of her approach to fashion
Marta Kostyuk has been around Tour for years. The Ukranian has stood out on multiple occasions for her takes on political matters, her tennis, and her fashion choices.
In a recent exclusive with Baseline, the World No. 18 opened up on feeling good about her tennis and off-court choices, especially on fashion.
During her interview, Kostyuk spoke about her changing outlook, saying she wasn’t always outspoken. In fact, the youngster said she felt restricted even when making small decisions like choice of clothing during her early years.
Talking about how years of Tour brought experience and maturity which changed her perspective on things, Kostyuk said (as quoted by Tennis.com):
“At first I felt really restricted. I felt like, Oh, this I cannot wear? Dos and don’ts, all these things. And then with time, I was like, You know what? I was so simple all these years, so now I don't care,” Marta Kostyuk said.
Kostyuk went on to say that she now wants to do “crazy things” and be more experimental with her choices. Speaking about her fashion choices in particular, the 22-year-old claimed she is happy to take risks now and then but still requires a little guidance.
“I want to try crazy things. I want to buy things that I've never bought and see if it will work out,” Marta Kostyuk said. “I'm trying to go that direction more and more now, because I just feel like I'm not that scared anymore to risk and I'm pretty happy about it" But I just want to be guided, a little bit, so it doesn’t look too silly!” she said.
"I actually hired a stylist" - Marta Kostyuk on choosing the right fits for herself
Marta Kostyuk is among the new crop of players sponsored by Wilson and has been closely involved with the development of the brand’s tennis line. Wilson even designed her tennis-inspired wedding dress.
Kostyuk's involvement with fashion, however, did not happen by chance. She said she has been an impulsive shopper but hired a stylist to help improve her choices.
“When I was younger, I didn't really care. I was just buying what I liked. And then once I started to grow up more and buying more expensive things, I was like, Okay, if I buy these things, I need to know how to wear them well, because then what's the point of buying all of it?” Marta Kostyuk said.
“I actually hired a stylist, so that she would help me to understand what fits me, what I can wear with what and we worked on my wardrobe,” she added.
On the tennis front, Kostyuk suffered a setback after losing her opening-round encounter at the China Open to Katie Volynets.
