"Obsession with Jannik Sinner has gone too far" - Fans annoyed by Nick Kyrgios' 'delusional' remarks on potential Australian Open clash with Italian
Tennis fans were left annoyed by Nick Kyrgios' comments about potentially facing Jannik Sinner at the 2025 Australian Open. Kyrgios will be making his return to the tennis court after a prolonged absence due to a series of injuries
Kyrgios has been openly critical of Sinner ever since the World No.1 tested positive for the banned substance clostebol in March 2024. During a recent appearance on Sam Querrey, John Isner, and Steve Johnson's 'Nothing Major' podcast, the former World No.13 expressed that he is eagerly waiting to play against the Italian.
"But I feel like I've got a lot more, I've got something, you know, let's be honest. I just want to go out there and I really want to play Sinner. Like I'm waiting for it man," Nick Kyrgios said.
Nick Kyrgios went on to say that if he were to face Jannik Sinner at the 2025 Australian Open, he would rally the crowd against the World No.1 and discard any respect he may have had for Sinner in order to win the match.
"Well, I thought about this and I've been thinking, I've been talking about it a little bit, like if I played him in Australian Open, like I would get every single person in the crowd to just like get on him. Like I would just turn it into an absolute riot. Like I would lose all respect, all respect would go out the window and I would just do anything to win," he added.
These remarks by Kyrgios appalled tennis fans, who took to social media to voice their displeasure and share their thoughts on the matter
One fan suggested that Kyrgios has been fixated on Sinner since the latter's positive drug test.
“This obsession with Sinner has gone way too far and he just keeps playing up to it because it gets attention. He doesn’t care about doping in tennis. He never said a word about the likes of Jarry or Cilic," a fan posted.
Another fan criticized the Australian for his overconfidence in defeating Sinner, labeling it as "narcissistic" behavior
“The thing is he doesn't realize that he doesn't have a good reputation. He seems very narcissistic like that. If he played Jannik, I know for a fact that Australians will cheer against him. If [Alex] De Minaur was in his place then maybe the reverse would happen but never with him," a fan wrote.
Some fans speculated that Kyrgios' animosity towards Jannik Sinner may stem from deeper issues beyond the Italian's doping scandal
“That sewer rat sure yaps too much while jan is busy training. but no i need that trash to be as far as can be from jannik, it’s not worth it. all that talk about wanting to drive the crowd against him it’s clearly not about the contamination case anymore at this point," a fan posted.
“This is genuinely deranged, he has something against sinner that is CLEARLY beyond a drug test. constantly publicly sh*t talking someone you work with is insanely unprofessional and bordering on harassment at this point," a fan wrote.
One fan argued that Nick Kyrgios was "delusional" in believing he could beat Sinner in a match, while another fan described the 29-year old's behavior towards the World No.1 as attention-seeking, 'unwell,' 'obsessive' and 'borderline threatening.'
“He is so f*cking delusional," a fan posted.
“At this point it's more than just seeking attention, he is unwell, obsessive and bordeline threatening just like when he said he will not be welcomed in the locker room. Sinner is becoming his entire personality. Nothing new last time he ended up in psychiatric ward," a fan wrote.
“The best thing about all this is jannik's utter indifference towards him. all this anger is just k*rgios punching the air. no one gives a f*ck about him," a fan posted.
When Jannik Sinner responded to Nick Kyrgios's criticism of him after doping scandal: “Everyone is free to say everything, it is what it is"
Earlier this year, during a press conference, Jannik Sinner addressed Nick Kyrgios' criticism of him following his positive test for the prohibited substance clostebol.
Sinner stated that everyone is entitled to their opinions, and he is not fazed by negative comments as he is a "relaxed person."
“Everyone is free to say everything. It’s ok. I don’t know what to say . Maybe I say something now and then the reaction will be something else. I’m always quite relaxed. I’m someone who forgets things quite fast. Everyone is free to say everything. It is what it is," Jannik Sinner said .
Nick Kyrgios and Jannik Sinner have faced each other only once on the ATP Tour - in the fourth round of the 2022 Miami Open, with the World No.1 emerging victorious with a score of 7-6(3), 6-3.
