Ons Jabeur responds to Iga Swiatek and Mikaela Shiffrin's doubles match invitation
After Iga Swiatek and Mikaela Shiffrin recently agreed to a friendly doubles match, Ons Jabeur accepted the tennis player's invitation to get in on the action.
Swiatek engaged in a conversation with American skier Shiffrin via social media on Wednesday (April 5). During the chat, Shiffrin requested a friendly doubles match with the Pole. With a slight blush on her face, Swiatek accepted the request.
In an effort to procure two more names for the doubles encounter, Swiatek picked fellow player Ons Jabeur. The Pole said that while you had to "give 100%" against the Tunisian, it was "satisfying" to beat her.
"There are matches, like [against] Ons Jabeur, where you feel like you have to give 100% and then you're winning and it's just satisfying. So, it'll be great to play against her if I win," said Swiatek.
Jabeur was quick to accept the invitation and invited American footballer Alex Morgan to be her partner.
"@iga_swiatek @MikaelaShiffrin Count me in @alexmorgan13 maybe you wanna play with me, how is your serve?" Jabeur tweeted.
On the tennis front, Swiatek will sit out her country's Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan in mid-April, citing a rib injury that worsened after Indian Wells.
Taking to Twitter, The Pole said that she will keep her fans updated about her progress and where she plays next.
"I will keep you updated about where I play next, because it depends on my process of recovering and the recommendation of my medical team. I have the best team behind me, we only need some time to deal with the injury," Iga Swiatek wrote.
Ons Jabeur, meanwhile, returned to the tour from an injury break last month. She is currently taking part in the Charleston Open, where she will face Anna Kalinskaya in the quarterfinals.
Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur's head-to-head record
Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur have squared off on five occasions, with the Pole holding a slim 3-2 advantage.
Their first meeting saw the Tunisian secure a first-round win (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) at the 2019 Citi Open. Swiatek responded by beating Jabeur at Wimbledon and Cincinnati in 2021.
Jabeur leveled the scores in Rome the following year with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win but Swiatek got the better of her at the US Open a few months later, winning 6-2, 7-6(5)
It will be interesting to follow this intense rivalry in the months and years to come.
