Peyton Stearns jokes about the ‘dog’ in her after conquering Daria Kasatkina at French Open to reach third round

American tennis player Peyton Stearns defeated Russia's Daria Kasatkina in the second round of the women's singles draw at the 2024 French Open on Friday, May 31. In the third round, she will face another Russian, Mirra Andreeva.

Stearns entered the draw at Roland Garros on the back of a championship-winning performance at the Morocco Open last week. She defeated Egypt's Mayar Sherif 6-2, 6-1 in the final in Rabat.

In Paris, she began her campaign with a hard-fought win over Croatia's Lucija Ciric Bagaric. The match stretched to three sets with two culminating in tiebreaks. Stearns clinched the first and third set to complete a 6-3, 6-7(8), 7-6(10-6) win.

The American competed with more conviction in the second round as she showed tenth-seed Daria Kasatkina the door with a 7-5, 6-2 beating on Friday. She overcame Kasatkina in less than 90 minutes on the back of six break points and 29 winners.

Hours after the win, Stearns took to X (formerly Twitter) and dropped the dog and the Eiffel Tower emojis to suggest the dog in her has arrived at the party in Paris.

Interestingly, this is not the first instance when Peyton Stearns has made references to her inner dog. She recently did it after turning her match against Lucia Bronzetti around in Barat.

The former University of Texas student stared at defeat, being 40-30 down at 5-0 in the third set against Bronzetti on return. She, however, produced the great escape by winning that game and then six more to come through 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

After the success, she quoted a post about her win on X and wrote:

"woof woof"

In a separate tweet a little later, she dropped a picture depicting a couple of Pitbulls inside a person's chest seen through the X-rays and wrote:

"Not over until it's over"

Peyton Stearns will clash with Russian tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva in the third round of the 2024 French Open on Saturday, June 1. Andreeva is not a strange opponent for Stearns as the American already has a win over the Russian.

She defeated Andreeva in the first round of the Dubai Open earlier in February this year. The three-setter lasted for an hour and 54 minutes with Peyton Stearns converting five break points and hitting three aces to secure a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory.

Andreeva has already caused an upset at Roland Garros as she trumped 19th seed Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in the second round. In her opener, the 17-year-old downed the USA's Emina Bektas 6-2, 6-3.
