"Proud doesn’t even come close" - Alexei Popyrin's girlfriend Amy exults as Aussie defeats Andrey Rublev to win maiden Masters 1000 at Canadian Open
Alexei Popyrin's girlfriend, Amy Pederick, was over the moon as the Australian clinched the maiden Masters 1000 of his career at the 2024 National Bank Open on Monday, August 12. The couple has been in a relationship since 2019 and Pederick, who is a physiotherapist, also helps out with the Aussie's health and fitness.
Popyrin had a phenomenal start to his campaign in Canada taking out Tomas Machac in straight sets. He then staged a series of upsets starting with 11th seed Ben Shelton and following it up with two huge wins against seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov and fourth seed Hubert Hurkacz, with both coming from a set down.
The 25-year-old defeated an in-form Sebastian Korda in straight sets in the semifinals to reach the final of a Masters 1000 for the first time in his career. He beat sixth seed Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 29 minutes in the final to cap off a stunning week.
Pederick took to Instagram to congratulate her boyfriend on his maiden Masters 1000 triumph. She posted two stories; in the first one, she reposted Popyrin's winning moment and in the second, she expressed delight at his victory telling him how he was beyond deserving and to take in the moment.
“Proud doesn’t even come close ♥️♥️ you’re so incredible and beyond deserving! Enjoy every second my love Alexei Popyrin 🥹🥹," Pederick wrote.
“This is one of the few weeks where my girlfriend isn’t traveling with me" - Alexei Popyrin
During the trophy presentation ceremony, Alexei Popyrin thanked his girlfriend Amy Pederick, and also joked about how this was one of the few weeks she wasn't traveling with him.
“This is one of the few weeks where my girlfriend isn’t traveling with me… and I win the tournament. I hope she comes to New York now,” Popyrin said.
Popyrin will head to the Cincinnati Masters next where he will square off against Gael Monfils in the opening round, in what will be the first meeting between the two.
