Rafael Nadal news: What has the Spaniard been up to since the US Open?
Following his exit from the Paris Olympics 2024, Rafael Nadal planned on participating in the US Open. However, he announced his decision to skip the season's final Major a few days later. He also stated that he would return to the tour at the Laver Cup in September.
However, the Spaniard pulled out of the Laver Cup as well. While his on-court plans remain up in the air, he's certainly enjoying his time away from the daily grind of the tour.
Nadal turned spectator a couple of weeks ago as he was spotted watching players compete in a Challenger tournament named after him. It was also held at his own academy in Manacor, Spain.
"Watching tennis at home! ☺️@rafaelnadal is enjoying the semifinals of the Rafa Nadal Open by Movistar! VAMOS!," Rafa Nadal Academy posted on Instagram.
The 22-time Major champion was also present at the inauguration of the new Espacio Movistar building a few days ago. The architectural marvel in the heart of Madrid saw him brush shoulders with badminton superstar Carolina Marin, and CEO of Telefonica Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete.
"Hello everyone. Yesterday I had the opportunity to go to the opening of the doors of the #EspacioMovistar in the Telefónica building. I also had the joy of seeing @carolinamarin and @jmalvpal among many other attendees. Congratulations @telefonica and @espaciomovistar for this marvel of innovation, technology and entertainment!," Rafael Nadal posted on Instagram (translated from Spanish).
While fans wait with bated breath for news of Nadal's return to the tour, he's clearly enjoying his transition away from the sport. His inactivity has only fueled the rumors of his impending retirement as well.
Rafael Nadal's withdrawal from the Laver Cup 2024 gives rise to fresh rumors of his retirement
Rafael Nadal was marketed as one of the star headliners of this year's Laver Cup, which will be held in Berlin, Germany, from September 20-22. However, his withdrawal came as a big blow not only to the organizers but also to the fans. He has since been replaced by Grigor Dimitrov.
While the Laver Cup line-up remains quite solid, with Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Daniil Medvedev, among others in the mix, the 38-year-old's absence is certainly a massive loss for the sport.
With no details regarding his next tournament, speculation is rife that Nadal could call it a day sooner rather than later. However, until he confirms the same, these rumors are nothing but idle gossip.
