"Roger Federer could do a better job"- Coco Gauff's ex-coach Brad Gilbert blasts Federal Reserve as interest rate cut results in stock market crash
Coco Gauff's former coach, Brad Gilbert, subtly criticized the Federal Reserve following its recent interest rate cut with a clever Roger Federer reference.
On December 18, 2024, the Federal Reserve implemented a 0.25% interest rate cut, reducing the target range to 4.25%-4.50%. This move lowers borrowing costs, aiming to encourage businesses and individuals to take out loans, increase spending, and make more investments.
The decision ultimately aims at addressing inflation, which currently stands at 2.7%, above the Fed's target of 2%. Chair Jerome Powell indicated that additional rate cuts could be considered, depending on how inflation is managed in the coming months.
"As we think about further cuts, weβre going to be looking for progress on inflation. We have been moving sideways on 12-month inflation," he said, via New York Post.
However, the decision had a negative impact on the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, a key stock market index, reportedly dropped by 1,123 points, closing at 42,326.87.
Former World No. 4 Brad Gilbert expressed his disapproval, stating that 20-time Major champion Roger Federer could do a much better job than the Federal Reserve.
"i am sure the real Fed @rogerfederer could do way better job πthen this fed, who every time he speaks puts the entire room in sleeper π hold," he wrote on X.
Gilbert frequently shares his thoughts on social issues.
When Brad Gilbert sparked controversy by not including Roger Federer in his 'Mt Rushmore of Tennis'
A few months ago, Brad Gilbert stirred controversy by omitting Roger Federer from his list of players making the Mount Rushmore of the Open Era.
The 63-year-old's comments followed Novak Djokovic's victory over Carlos Alcaraz, 7-6(3), 7-6(2), to secure his first Olympic gold medal in Paris. This victory made Djokovic the fifth player to complete a career Golden Slam, having won all four Majors and the Olympic gold. Before Djokovic, his longtime rival Rafael Nadal, along with Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, and Serena Williams, had achieved this remarkable feat.
Gilbert wrote on X:
"The Mt Rushmore of tennis πΎ in the open era Steffi Serena Vamos-Rafa and Djoker πͺππππ."
Gilbert's comments sparked backlash from fans, many of whom argued that Federer's profound impact on the sport warranted his inclusion. Some even advocated for the recognition of Martina Navratilova and Andre Agassi.
While addressing the fans' doubts, Gilbert wrote:
"She would be 3rd best Woman like Fed so if there were 6 they both be on."
While Federer retired from tennis after the 2022 Laver Cup, Nadal recently bid farewell to his career following Team Spain's exit from the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga.
