Rohan Bopanna, Matthew Ebden face defeat in second ATP Finals 2024 group-stage match

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden experienced a tough defeat in their second group-stage match at the ATP Finals 2024, succumbing to top seeds Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavić 7-5, 6-3, on Wednesday, November 13.

The first set initially appeared to be in favor of sixth seeds Bopanna and Ebden, as they managed to secure an early break. However, they were unable to maintain their momentum, and a nervy 12th game saw Ebden cough up two consecutive double faults, which handed their opponents the crucial break and the first set. This error shifted the match’s flow, allowing Arévalo and Pavić to take control.

Arévalo and Pavić continued to dominate in the second set, leveraging their consistent serving and solid teamwork. Despite a late fightback from Bopanna and Ebden, who won nine out of 12 points behind their first serve, they could not overturn the deficit.

Arévalo and Pavić's impressive 75% first-serve percentage and 72% win rate on their first serve, coupled with an unblemished 4-for-4 break point conversion rate, proved decisive.

Defensively, Arévalo and Pavić outperformed their opponents, winning 23 receiving points to Bopanna and Ebden's 16, and their longest streak of five consecutive games won highlighted their control.

This defeat leaves Bopanna and Ebden with challenges ahead as they seek to advance to the knockouts, while Arévalo and Pavić strengthened their standing in the ATP Finals group stage.
