"Seeing her & my wife is something special" - Novak Djokovic's US Open 1R opponent Radu Albot on having wife Doina and daughter Adeline's support
Novak Djokovic's first-round opponent at the 2024 US Open, Radu Albot recently opened up about having the support of his wife, Doina, and his daughter, Adeline, during his matches. This upcoming match will mark the first time Albot will compete against the Serb on the ATP Tour.
Djokovic is seeded second at the New York Slam and will kick off his campaign following a gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He had opted to withdraw from two ATP Masters 1000 hard court tournaments - the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open ahead of the US Open.
Meanwhile, Albot earned his spot in the main draw at Flushing Meadows by winning his way through the qualifying rounds. He overcame Javier Barranco Cosano 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 in the first round of qualifiers, defeated Luca Van Assche 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 in the second round, and then secured his place in the main draw by triumphing over Shintaro Mochizuki 6-4, 5-7, 6-3
Recently, Radu Albot talked about having his wife, Doina, and his four-year-old daughter, Adeline, cheering for him from the stands. He said (via ATP Tour):
“For me, seeing her and my wife in the stands is something special. You play all your life, and at one moment, you have an extra supporter in your team, a little one, so this is really interesting to feel."
“Never practiced with Novak Djokovic, it's going to be the first time that we'll play on the same court” - Radu Albot
In the aforementioned interview, Radu Albot also talked about facing Novak Djokovic in the first round of the 2024 US Open.
“I never played him, so it's interesting, it will be interesting to do that, but also at the same you expect when you qualify to get an easier draw, of course, than to play against the second seed. I never practised with Djokovic and it's going to be the first time that we'll play on the same court,” he said.
“I'm looking forward to this challenge, and I would like to see what I can do, how I can play, and how the match is going to be, especially that it's going to be on a big court with a full house,” he added.
The winner of the first-round match between Djokovic and Albot will advance to play either Laslo Djere or Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round.
