Serena Williams' ex-coach Rennae Stubbs came out in 2006 in a newspaper interview
In January 2006, in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Rennae Stubbs came out as lesbian. At the time, she was in a relationship with a former US professional softballer. In the interview, Stubbs said,
"I always say to my friends, 'wouldn't it be great if everybody who was gay said they were? If we said, February 21, or whatever, this is the coming out day'. It would be phenomenal."
"And it would be nice if everybody could just accept that it's not a choice, this is who you are. You would never, ever choose this, choose to be gay. It's such a difficult thing to deal with, coming out to people and talking about it."
Stubbs, who had her first lesbian encounter at the age of 25, also spoke about visibility in tennis, expressing her hope for greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ athletes. She said,
"But I don't hide who I am any more. Everyone in the tennis world pretty much knows who's gay and who's not; the only reason I would like it spoken about publicly more is that I wish everybody would realise that, 'see all those people you admire? Out of 10 or them, four are gay, and I just want you to know that your child can still idolise them'."
Stubbs enjoyed a successful tennis career, winning 60 doubles titles, including six Grand Slam victories, four in women’s doubles and two in mixed doubles. After retiring, the Aussie transitioned to coaching, and she has since worked with top players like Serena Williams and Eugenie Bouchard.
Now 53, Stubbs is in a relationship with Eden Bruce. The couple frequently shares heartwarming moments on social media, highlighting their close bond.
