Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian cites Angel City FC and LA Golf Club partnerships as $20 million Maggie Hathaway Golf Course renovation begins
The Maggie Hathaway Golf Course, a public 9-hole par-3 course in South L.A., began its $20 million renovation a few days ago. In response, Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, emphasized how his teams, Angel City FC and LA Golf Club, have partnered with non-profits from the outset to support similar community projects.
L.A. County Parks and Recreation and the Fore Youth Golf Foundation are leading the renovation. Backed by strong public support, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved $7.8 million from the project's 2024-2025 supplemental budget.
Moreover, Ohanian, along with wife Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams, made key contributions to the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course renovation in January. As founding owners of Los Angeles Golf Club, they committed 10% of their annual sponsorship revenues for the project.
The update concerning the transformation project of the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course was shared by the official X handle of Los Angeles Golf Club a few days back.
The Reddit co-founder later shared the post on X and emphasized that building sports teams should involve immediate, meaningful community investment. He further cited examples of clubs in which he had invested.
Ohanian and Williams are also major shareholders in Angel City FC, which joined the National Women's Soccer League in 2022.
"The new way to build a sports team isn't to wait until years later to start passing out turkeys — it's partnering with community non-profits from Day Zero to invest in the community where you're building a team. We did it with @weareangelcity and doing it again with @weareLAGC," he wrote.
Ohanian later shed light on the long-term impact of the project.
"I can’t think of a better way than reinvesting in this course": Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian on Maggie Hathaway project
In a recent conversation with Forbes, Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian explained that reinvesting in Maggie Hathaway Golf Course is the best way for Los Angeles Golf Club to grow and become a significant part of the local golf community.
"If LAGC can continue to grow and be a big part of the Los Angeles golf community, I can’t think of a better way to do it than reinvesting in this course," he said.
Ohanian envisions that future golfers will benefit from early access to Maggie Hathaway Golf Course. The 41-year-old believes the course will not only inspire professional success but also make the sport more inclusive.
"A decade from now, we could have someone on the tour who talks about getting access, and getting onto a golf course early in their career through Maggie Hathaway. To be able to see that impact on the sport will be a helluva story. And for many more people who will never play golf professionally, it’ll still break down barriers, make the sport more inclusive and create access and opportunities for Angelenos," he added.
In addition to his investment, Ohanian is an avid golfer and often shares his love for the sport with his daughter Olympia. He once mentioned that Olympia’s golfing skills surpassed his own, which inspired him to start taking lessons.
