Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian impressed by Halloween recreation of American's iconic farewell US Open outfit by young tennis star
Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams' husband, was impressed by a young tennis player’s recreation of her iconic 2022 US Open outfit. To celebrate Halloween, Ohanian announced a $1,000 prize for the child who dresses up as their favorite female athlete, with the winner selected by Jenny Nguyen, CEO of The Sports Bra.
For the 2022 US Open, her farewell tournament, Serena Williams collaborated with Nike to design a jet-black dress inspired by figure skating outfits. The dress featured a six-layered skirt, symbolizing her six US Open titles, and a crystal-encrusted bodice that sparkled under the lights.
She completed the look with custom Nike sneakers, adorned with diamond details, her initials, and gold shoelace tags.
A young tennis star, Chi-Chi Carr, who is sponsored by Leylah Fernandez's foundation, took to her Instagram Story dressed as the 23-time Grand Slam champion from her farewell US Open.
Carr tagged several accounts including Williams and her husband's. The Reddit co-founder took notice of the Story where the young girl twirled in the black dress. Resharing the post, Ohanian wrote:
"She nailed the twirl"
Ohanian, meanwhile, announced that he would be awarding a prize money of $1000 to the child who dresses as their favorite female athlete. The winner would be chosen by the CEO of The Sports Bra. The 41-year-old wrote on X:
"Let's do a contest.. tag @TheSportsBraPDX with your kids dressing as their favorite female athletes this Halloween and Jenny (CEO) will pick her favorite costume and I'll gift $1,000 to the winner."
Serena Williams credited Nike for her iconic US Open 2022 outfit featuring diamonds
During an interview with The Cut in September 2022, Serena Williams opened up about how she challenged Nike with her demands. However, she was all praise for the designers at the company who made it work.
She talked about her iconic Andre Agassi-inspired jean skirt before her luxurious farewell US Open kit.
"I was like, 'I want to wear a jean skirt on the court. No one has worn a jean skirt yet.' But how do you make that functional? Nike made it functional," Williams said.
"And even with the last outfit I wore, I would challenge Nike with insane things. I mean, how are you going to wear rhinestones on the court? It was really all about shining like a diamond out there. They figured it out," she added.
In a statement, Nike highlighted Williams' involvement in creating her latest outfit, emphasizing her strong background and passion for fashion that helped shape her look for the US Open. Adding a heartfelt touch, her daughter, Olympia, had also worn a matching mini version of her mother’s outfit.
