Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian receives warm welcome at Virginia Cavaliers women's basketball game; jokes about team being 'stuck' with him

Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian attended the Virginia Cavaliers women's basketball season opener on Monday, November 4. Welcomed warmly by his alma mater, Ohanian joked that the team is now "stuck" with him moving forward.

Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, attended the University of Virginia (UVA) where he double majored in history and business commerce. He returned to the home of the Virginia Cavaliers women's basketball team to attend their season opener against American Eagles.

The 41-year-old took to his Instagram Story to share several images of the NCAA women's basketball match which the Cavaliers comfortably won 104-68.

After the match, the official account of the Wahoos posted about Ohanian's presence in the stadium during their match. The alumnus had received applause from the attendees in the stadium and he even got to meet the team in the locker room. The UVA captioned the post:

"Thank you to @alexisohanian for coming out and supporting the Hoos tonight. It was a huge pleasure having you cheer us on. Can NOT wait to have you on our baselines again! Everyone watches women’s sports."

While speaking on the Pivot podcast earlier this year, Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian highlighted the influence and popularity of female athletes on social media. He pointed out that female athletes often have an advantage in the digital space.

"In the age of social, if you look up to these athletes in college – and let’s use college basketball right now, on followers. None of this is about charity. This is democracy," Ohanian said.
"This is people clicking follow on the largest social network in the world and saying, ‘I would rather follow her, for instance, than this dude.’ Female athletes have such an edge in social because they create content, they create memes. We know women overperform as content creators than men," he added.

Ohanian highlighted how women athletes excel on social media, creating engaging content and memes. He believes their unique strengths, combined with NIL opportunities, could reshape the sports market with the right entrepreneurial approach.

The 41-year-old has repeatedly championed women's sports. Along with his wife, Serena Williams, and their daughters, he owns a stake in Angel City FC, an NWSL club. He also organized Athlos NYC, an all-women track event. Most recently, he has co-produced an X-exclusive show featuring 11 NWSL players called 'The Offseason.'
