Sloane Stephens faced Taylor Townsend in an exhibition match in Atlanta earlier this year
In July, Sloane Stephens and Taylor Townsend kicked off the 2024 Atlanta Open with an exhibition match that was delayed by over an hour but was packed with excitement for fans.
Stephens came into the match with a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head, most recently beating Townsend in Austin in February 2023.
Townsend, meanwhile, brought momentum from her first Grand Slam title after winning the Wimbledon doubles crown earlier in July. Originally, Venus Williams was scheduled to play, but Townsend stepped in as an injury replacement.
Though the 2017 US Open champion Stephens and Townsend competed fiercely, the match had a relaxed atmosphere, allowing them to engage with the crowd. Stephens highlighted the special experience of playing in front of a "sold-out crowd":
"Yeah, it was great. Being able to play in a sold-out crowd makes it incredibly special," Stephens said (via The Atlanta Journal-Constitution). "But I think they obviously come out a little bit more because they don’t get to see as much women’s tennis so to be able to play here in front of a nice crowd was special."
Townsend echoed this sentiment, saying the exhibition format allowed them to break free from the usual "rules" of tour matches.
