“So proud" - Venus Williams gushes over Serena Williams as she graces the cover of Glamour Magazine as ‘Woman of the Year’
Serena Williams and Venus Williams are the most successful sibling duo in tennis history, and the two are each other's most vocal cheerleaders away from the courts. Recently, the older Williams was quick to praise her sister as she graced the cover of Glamour Magazine.
Venus Williams was the first of the two sisters to gain fame with the global tennis audience after her remarkable run at the 1997 US Open, which saw her finish as runner-up. The 44-year-old has since gone on to win seven major singles titles.
On the other hand, while Serena Williams turned pro a year after her older sister, she would go on to eclipse her sibling's success, winning 23 Grand Slam singles titles and spending 319 weeks as the World No.1.
While Serena Williams has called time on her tennis career, her older sister Venus continues to play professionally, and the duo keep cheering for each other in their respective endeavors. Most recently, Venus celebrated her younger sister as she appeared on the cover of Glamour Magazine as the ‘Woman of the Year’. Taking to her Instagram story, she shared a photo of Serena and wrote:
“So proud of you.”
Serena Williams opens up on her ‘co-dependent’ relationship with Venus Williams
Despite being fierce rivals on the tennis court, Serena Williams and Venus Williams were each other's biggest supporters. In her recent interview with Glamour Magazine, Serena opened up on her relationship with her sister, explaining that the duo learned to rely on each other as they traveled the world while playing.
“Tennis is so lonely. You’re on the road for 10 or 11 months out of the year. You really rely on having someone else out there. And Venus was there, and who else was going to relate to me? We were successful, and we were Black. We leaned on each other. We lived together. We lived together until a year before I had Olympia, so literally our whole lives.”
Serena Williams labeled her relationship with Venus as ‘co-dependent’ but emphasized that she doesn't want that to change.
“Some things never change. I don’t even want to not be codependent with her. I love her. I don’t want our lives to ever be separate.”
While they were rivals as singles players, Serena Williams and Venus Williams excelled as a team. The duo won 14 major doubles titles and went unbeaten as a pair in all their Grand Slam finals.
