Stefanos Tsitsipas finds solace in girlfriend Paula Badosa's company after Swiss Indoors QF exit hampers ATP Finals qualification chances
Stefanos Tsitsipas cozied up with girlfriend Paula Badosa after facing a loss in the 2024 Swiss Indoors quarterfinal against Arthur Fils. The Greek player's chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals have taken a significant hit due to the loss.
On Friday (Oct. 25), Tsitsipas faced Fils on Center Court at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel. After a tightly contested first set, which Fils edged out in a tiebreak, the Frenchman cruised through the second set to secure a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory.
Soon after the match, Tsitsipas' girlfriend Badosa, who arrived at the stadium with him for his first match at the event, took to Instagram to share cute pictures of the couple.
Tsitsipas has qualified for the ATP Finals for the past five years owing to his consistent showing. The Greek also won the year-end championships on his debut in 2019. However, this year, his chances to qualify look bleak.
Following his Swiss Indoors loss, Stefanos Tsitsipas now sits in 12th place in the ATP Race to Turin with 2,975 points, having gained 100 points from the tournament. Tommy Paul holds the 11th spot with 3,135 points, Grigor Dimitrov is 10th with 3,150, and Alex de Minaur ranks ninth with 3,455.
Andrey Rublev, who also lost in the quarterfinals to Ben Shelton, occupies the final qualification spot in eighth with 3,720 points, leaving Tsitsipas 745 points behind. With only the Paris Masters left to earn significant points, Tsitsipas has a slim chance of closing the gap in time to qualify for the ATP Finals.
"Stefanos Tsitsipas is a champion and he will always be a champion" - Paula Badosa
At the 2024 US Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa made their mixed doubles Grand Slam debut. Following her third-round win over Elena Gabriela Ruse, Badosa said she was looking forward to playing with her boyfriend and showed support as he lost in the first round in the men's singles.
“We’re looking forward to it, it’s really nice to share the court together... We spend time off court, but also on court. It’s really special in a Slam. It’s like a dream come true... Big shout out to him. He’s going through tough moments – but he’s a champion and he will always be a champion,” Paula Badosa said.
However, the couple faced a 6-7(3), 4-6 defeat in the first round against Giuliana Olmos and Santiago González.
