Stefanos Tsitsipas lands in controversy after speeding at 275 kmph with Aston Martin, clarifies incident after leaving fans concerned
Stefanos Tsitsipas was caught in a controversy after sharing a video of himself driving an Aston Martin at over 275 km/h, leaving fans concerned. The Greek player later offered an explanation for his actions.
Tsitsipas took to Instagram to share a recap of the past few months, featuring a carousel of images and videos. This included moments with his girlfriend Paula Badosa from their trip to the UK, a marked map, a video of him reaching 275 km/h while driving an Aston Martin, and a clip discussing a child's upbringing by "narcissistic parents."
Some fans were left concerned by the post with one fan on Reddit claiming that the 26-year-old should be checked upon.
"From the narcissistic parents post to this, it's concerning now... at this point can someone please check on him like actually," they wrote.
"Okay let’s maybe get this guy into some therapy, hope this isn’t in Monaco because that would not be very wise 🥴" another fan wrote.
In the same post, Stefanos Tsitsipas clarified that the incident occurred on a racetrack, emphasizing that all necessary safety measures were in place.
"The video featuring the Aston Martin at speeds exceeding 250km/h was recorded on a closed, straight road within a professional racing track, ensuring all safety measures were in place."
Stefanos Tsitsipas shares cryptic message about being raised by "narcissistic parents"
In the same Instagram post, Stefanos Tsitsipas also shared a cryptic video apparently hinting at challenges in his upbringing. The Greek tennis star reflected on being taught that "love is conditional" and shared a video narrating the impact of "narcissistic parents" on a child’s development.
Tensions within the Tsitsipas family have been evident, with his parents, Apostolos and Julia, often criticized for their mid-match instructions. Stefanos has frequently expressed frustration over these interactions, which have drawn attention from fans and experts.
In a past interview, his mother also acknowledged the strained relationship between the player and his father.
"The child of a narcissistic parent learns early that love is conditional. They quickly understand they’ll only be loved for what they do, not who they are. They sense their parents cannot meet their emotional needs, so they learn to perform: excelling in sports, academics or becoming their parents’ confidant and emotional support," the narrator was heard as saying.
Further, in the video shared by Tsitsipas, the narrator described how a child of overly critical and demanding parents often suppresses their true self to meet expectations, leading to a lifelong need for external validation.
Following five consecutive appearances at the ATP Finals, the Greek ended this year without playing ar the year-end championships, as he could only be an alternate. He finished the season ranked World No. 11.
The 26-year-old is next scheduled to feature in the World Tennis League, an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi. Here, he will be a part of the Kites alongside Paula Badosa, Nick Kyrgios and Jasmine Paolini.
