Sumit Nagal achieves career-best 71st rank; becomes joint fourth highest ATP-ranked player of all time from India

Indian ace tennis player Sumit Nagal achieved his career-best 71st rank in the latest ATP singles rankings released on June 17, Monday. Notably, he climbed six spots up, from the 77th to the 71st rank, courtesy of his impressive performances.

It’s worth noting that Sumit Nagal, the Olympic-bound athlete, finished as a runner-up in the recently concluded Perugia ATP Challenger tournament on June 16, Sunday. The sole Indian at the Paris Olympics 2024 in the men’s singles event has accumulated 777 ATP points so far.

Sumit Nagal has been in excellent form of late and his recent impressive results helped him bag the Paris Olympics 2024 quota in the men’s singles event.


Sumit Nagal joins the elite list in the ATP rankings alongside Leander Peas and Somdev Devvarman

With the latest update in the ATP rankings, Sumit Nagal has now become the joint fourth-highest ATP-ranked Indian player of all time since the introduction of the computerized system of rankings in 1973.

He went past Prajnesh Gunneswaran, Anand Amritraj, and Leander Paes. Somdev Devvarman (62), Ramesh Krishnan (23), and Vijay Amritraj (18) are the highest ATP-ranked players of all time from India. Nagal (71) and Sashi Menon (71) are jointly tied at the fourth spot.

2024 turned out to be a remarkable season for Nagal. The Indian ace tennis player started the year by bagging a qualification for the main draw of the Australian Open where he stunned 31st-seeded Kazakh Alexander Bublik in the opening round. He became the first Indian male tennis player in 35 years to defeat a seeded player in a Slam.

Furthermore, he secured a title win in the Chennai Open ATP Challenger to make it into the top 100 in the ATP Rankings for the first time. Additionally, he became the first-ever Indian male to secure a main-draw win at the Monte Carlo Masters, defeating Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in the first round.

Remarkably, Nagal made his French Open debut and is also set to compete in the main draw at Wimbledon. Most recently, Nagal secured his sixth title on the Challenger Tour in Heilbronn, Germany.
