Sumit Nagal addresses injury concerns amidst Davis Cup absence, responds to AITA's criticism on player withdrawals

India’s top-ranked men's singles tennis player, Sumit Nagal, broke his silence on social media, addressing concerns over his absence from the Davis Cup. His statement came in response to criticism from the All India Tennis Association (AITA) following India’s 4-0 loss to Sweden in the tournament.

AITA had expressed disappointment with several key players, including Nagal, for not participating in the competition while taking part in other tournaments.

In his heartfelt message, Sumit Nagal spoke about his commitment to representing India, calling it an honor he holds in the highest regard. However, he also made it clear that his decision to sit out of the Davis Cup was based on medical advice, as he was nursing an injury that could have worsened had he participated.

The player emphasized that the well-being of both his health and the team's performance were the factors behind his withdrawal.

"Representing my country is always a privilege and an honor that I hold in the highest regard," he wrote.

Sumit Nagal explained that his injury, and subsequent consultations with his medical team, made it clear that competing in the Davis Cup could have jeopardized not only his health but also the team's overall performance.

"I believe it is better for the team and for the country to have someone at 100% rather than risking further injury and potentially disrupting the match," he added.

Despite the controversy, Sumit Nagal made it clear that his commitment to Indian tennis remains as strong as ever. He recalled his proudest moments representing India, including his participation in the Olympics, and reassured fans that he looks forward to future opportunities to represent the country.

"I am deeply committed to my country and will always give my best whenever I represent it," he emphasized. "I look forward to future opportunities to wear the national colors and make my country proud, both on and off the court," he stated.

Sumit Nagal among players who faced criticism from AITA

Sumit Nagal’s absence from the Davis Cup sparked criticism from the AITA, which issued a statement pointing out that players like Nagal, Yuki Bhambri and Mukund Sasikumar were participating in other tournaments while skipping national duty.

AITA spokesperson Dhupar suggested that the presence of these players might have improved India's chances of winning. Dhupar also specifically mentioned Nagal, who is playing in a tournament in China, urging him to clarify his fitness concerns.

Nagal acknowledged the criticisms but emphasized that he had informed the AITA well in advance of his injury and inability to play. He also addressed concerns surrounding athlete compensation, clarifying that it is standard practice for players to receive compensation, even when representing their country.

“My discussions with AITA and the Davis Cup Captain are confidential, and I would not like to indulge in any speculation about this,” he further added.
