Swedish Open: Sumit Nagal starts off with a win in men's singles but falls in men's doubles

India’s top-ranked men’s singles player, Sumit Nagal, got off to a winning start at the Swedish Open, also known as the Nordea Open, in Bastad. Nagal, on Tuesday, clinched a dominant straight sets 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sweden's Elias Ymer in the Round of 32.

This win will be even sweeter for Nagal, given the fact that Ymer had a 2-0 head-to-head record over him going into this encounter. Nagal had previously lost to him at the Split Open in 2023, and at the Lyon Open in 2019.

It is a much-needed win for Sumit Nagal, who is all set to compete at the Paris Olympics later this month. Additionally, it was a cherry on the cake for Nagal, who achieved a career-high ATP world ranking of 68 in men’s singles a few hours before the game.

The unseeded Nagal will now take on fourth seed Mariano Navone of Argentina in the Round of 16 at the Swedish Open.

2024 has been a great year for Nagal as he began it in 138th place in the rankings. He broke into the top 100 for the first time, and competed in three Grand Slams this year, also claiming an impressive win over the seeded Alexander Bublik in straight sets at the Australian Open.

Although Nagal made early exits at Wimbledon and the French Open, he will hope to deliver strong results as he represents India at his second Olympics appearance in Paris.

Sumit Nagal beaten in the men’s doubles of the Swedish Open

Sumit Nagal’s happiness following his men’s singles win was short-lived as he went down in the Round of 16 of the men's doubles at the Swedish Open.

Nagal, alongside Poland’s Karol Drzewiecki, lost in straight sets 3-6, 4-6 against the French pair of Alexandre Müller and Luca Van Assche.

However, Nagal’s journey at the Swedish Open is still on as he prepares for his singles second round clash against Navone on July 18. Following his Swedish Open campaign, Nagal's focus will turn to the Olympic Games in Paris.
