Taylor Fritz continues 0-4 losing streak in Grand Slam QF as last American remaining at Wimbledon 2024 falls to Lorenzo Musetti

Taylor Fritz's 2024 Wimbledon campaign came to an end on Wednesday, with the American No. 1 falling to Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals. With his loss, there are no more singles players left in the tournament in either the men's or women's draw.

Fritz started the contest on the front foot, taking the opening set 6-3 with an early of serve. The second set saw Musetti turn the tide, racing away to a 5-3 lead. However, serving for the match, the Italian surrendered the break to take things to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Musetti prevailed, taking it 7-6(5) with an emphatic serving display.

In the third set, the 25th seed seized the momentum, running away with it 6-2 with two breaks of serve. Once again, the fortunes turned in the next set, as Fritz found his serves again in a 6-3 rout to force a decider.

With all to play for in the final set, Lorenzo Musetti drew first blood, breaking serve early for a 3-0 lead. The Italian then broke again, making it 5-0. On the verge of being served a bagel, Fritz managed to get on the scoreboard. However, it was too little too late for the American, as Musetti held his next serve to take the match after nearly three and a half hours on Court No. 1.

With the loss, Fritz is now 0-4 in Grand Slam quarterfinals. The 26-year-old lost at the stage earlier this year at the Australian Open, at the US Open last year and at Wimbledon in 2022.

Including Fritz, there were three Americans in the last eight of the men's and women's singles at SW19 this week. All three have now lost, with Tommy Paul going out to Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Navarro biting the dust against Jasmine Paolini.

Following his win over Taylor Fritz, Lorenzo Musetti will next take on 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals at Wimbledon. Djokovic did not have to step foot on the court for the quarterfinals, as his opponent Alex de Minaur withdrew from the tournament ahead of the clash due to injury.

Djokovic leads Musetti 5-1 in the head-to-head, and has won their two most recent clashes. However, this will be the first time they meet on grass. The winner of the match will take on either Carlos Alcaraz or Daniil Medvedev in the final of the Grass Major.
