Taylor Fritz's girlfriend Morgan Riddle issues clarification over comment seemingly aimed at Alexander Zverev after controversial Wimbledon clash
Taylor Fritz's girlfriend Morgan Riddle seemingly targeted Alexander Zverev with a comment after the American's win over the German in their fourth-round clash at Wimbledon 2024 on July 8. Riddle, however, subsequently retracted her remarks and said they were blown 'out of proportion' by the media.
Fritz was two sets down against Zverev at Wimbledon and the German was on his way to his first-ever quarterfinal at SW19. However, the American fought back from the dire position to win the match 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3.
During the match, Riddle posted an image from the stands on her Instagram stories and wrote:
"cheer loud ladies"
After Fritz's impressive comeback win, Riddle posted a video of herself celebrating and wrote:
"when ur man wins 4 the girls. "
Both of these Instagram stories seemingly referred to Zverev's off-court life. The German was recently involved in a court case where it was alleged that he was physically abusive towards his ex-girlfriend. The case was settled via an outside court settlement in early June 2024, although he was not declared innocent.
Riddle soon deleted the stories and posted a clarification on Tuesday, July 9. The social media influencer wrote that she did not imply any off-court happenings with her comments and that the media had blown it out of proportion.
"Regarding my stories yesterday... I took them down as soon as I realized the misunderstanding and how blown out of proportion they had become by the media. they were not about anything that's happened off the tennis court & there's no bad blood between anyone," Morgan Riddle wrote in her Instagram story.
Further, she thanked the crowd for their support for Fritz and hoped for the same in his quarterfinal outing.
"Super proud of T [Taylor Fritz] for the match yesterday, thank you to the crowd for the support & looking forward to tomorrow," she added.
Alexander Zverev criticized Taylor Fritz's box after Wimbledon 4R clash
During a press conference after his Wimbledon fourth-round clash against Taylor Fritz, Alexander Zverev praised the American and his coaches. However, he was seemingly irked by the members of his box who were not from the tennis fraternity.
"His team is extremely respectful. I think his coach, his physio, also his second coach, they're extremely respectful," Alexander Zverev said.
"I think there's some other people that maybe are in the box that are not maybe from the tennis world, that are not maybe particularly watching every single match.... They were a bit over the top," he added.
In his second quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon, Taylor Fritz will face Lorenzo Musetti on Wednesday, July 10.
