Twelth seed and home favorite Taylor Fritz will lock horns with fourth seed and 2020 runner-up Alexander Zverev in a tantalizing quarterfinals encounter at the 2024 US Open on Tuesday, September 3. The winner will face either 20th seed Frances Tiafoe or ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinals next.
Fritz began his campaign at the US Open with a routine 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Camilo Ugo Carabelli. He then defeated 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in the second round in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-1.
Fritz continued his winning streak with another straight-sets win, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, over Francisco Comesana in the third round. In the fourth round, he dropped his first set of the tournament against eighth seed Casper Ruud but quickly bounced back to win the next three sets, ultimately securing a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Zverev on the contrary kicked off his campaign in New York with a hard-fought 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 win over compatriot Maximilian Marterer. He then breezed through his second-round match against Arthur Cazaux with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry gave him plenty to think about during their third round encounter, but Fritz showed incredible mental fortitude to secure an epic 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 comeback victory. Brandon Nakashima also took the first set off Zverev in their fourth-round match, but the German once again delivered outstanding tennis from that point onward, winning 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.
Zverev and Fritz have faced off 9 times on tour with the German currently marginally edging their head-to-head 5-4. Fritz, however, won their most recent encounter in an epic five-setter at Wimbledon earlier this year. He also leads their 3-2 in their matches on hard courts.
