"The nerves were high"- Carlos Alcaraz admits he couldn't get out of the car for Wimbledon Champions' Ball until Spain's Euro 2024 goal was confirmed
It was a historic day for Spain as Carlos Alcaraz won his 2nd Wimbledon title while later that same evening the Spanish football team beat England in the final of Euro 2024. By doing so, Spain became the first nation to win the European championship four times.
The 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz cruised past Novak Djokovic in straight sets to retain his Wimbledon title and clinch his fourth Grand Slam. Following his triumph, Alcaraz attended the traditional Wimbledon champions' ball along with the women's singles winner Barbora Krejcikova.
Alcaraz was reportedly glued to the screen during the Euro finals and overjoyed following Spain's win as the 4-time Grand Slam winner enjoyed a double victory for his nation.
Alcaraz, on being asked where he was watching the Euro final, said:
"Well I started on the phone, switched to the TV at home and then coming here on the Ipad so its a mix."
The Spaniard was deeply involved in the Euro final, and when asked whether it was true that he refused to leave the car, he responded in the affirmative. He recounted feeling the nerves while Spain's second goal was being confirmed.
"That's right just before getting out of the car, I saw the goal, I thought it was offside but I couldn't get out of the car until (I) made sure it was given a goal. Those few minutes the nerves were so high," said Alcaraz.
Spain scored an 87th-minute winner to hand England their 2nd straight defeat in Euro finals.

The traditional dance at the champions' ball saw Carlos Alcaraz and Barbora Krejcikova pairing up to put on a dance performance together. The duo shared the dance floor as they danced to Dua Lipa's hit song Dance the Night from the movie 'Barbie'.
Although Alcaraz had previously told Annabel Croft in his triumphant Centre Court interview that his dancing abilities "could be better," fans online were more than happy to see the Spanish star's moves.
Alcaraz will next be seen competing in the Paris Olympics, where he will pair up with Rafael Nadal to compete in the doubles competition. The two Spanish tennis players will also vie for a gold medal in singles.
