"The worst pain I’ve ever felt" - Bianca Andreescu praying for nothing serious after horror Miami Open injury
Bianca Andreescu's brilliant run at the 2023 Miami Open came to an abrupt end on Monday. The Canadian suffered a horrible injury during her fourth-round clash against Ekaterina Alexandrova.
After losing the first set 6-7 (0), Andreescu was leading 2-0 in the second when she rolled her ankle in unexpected fashion. Distraught in pain, the former US Open champion had to be taken off the court in a wheelchair, leaving fans dismayed.
Taking to social media, the 22-year-old has now updated the status of her injury, admitting that she is in braces at the moment. Calling it the "worst pain" she has ever felt in her life, Bianca Andreescu hoped it would be nothing serious as her diagnosis results are still pending.
The former World No. 4 further extended her thanks to fans and fellow players for their kind words as she undergoes this ordeal.
"Woke up with a brace on my foot… anyone know what happened?" Andreescu joked.
"On a serious note tho… that was the worst pain I’ve ever felt… praying for nothing serious. Still waiting on official results. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and kind words, doesn’t go unnoticed," she added.
Bianca Andreescu yet to lose a completed match at the Miami Open in her career
Bianca Andreescu has now made three appearances at the Miami Open and, incredibly, is yet to lose a completed match at the tournament. Her first appearance in 2019 saw the Canadian reach the fourth round, where she retired midway through her match against former World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit.
In her second appearance in 2021, the former US Open champion reached the final. This time, she had to retire against former World No. 1 and three-time Grand Slam champion Ashleigh Barty due to another injury.
With 2023 being another loss by retirement, Andreescu continued her interesting relationship with Miami.
The 22-year-old was full of confidence in the 2023 edition after her penultimate encounter against Sofia Kenin. She even declared that she felt she deserved to be making such deep runs in big tournaments.
Andreescu, in fact, had felt far more deserving of her run this year than the time she made the final a couple of years ago, making her injury all the more sadder.
"Last time I played here in 2021, I did not enjoy myself. I did not feel that I deserved to be in that final," Bianca Andreescu said. "But this year, I feel like a totally different person & I definitely feel like I deserve to be here right now."
