"This is wrong" - Martina Navratilova furious at Israeli armed forces after videos of war in Gaza go viral in new documentary
Martina Navratilova criticized Israeli forces in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. It has claimed the lives of over 40,000 Palestinians and 1,700 Israelis.
Shortly after the war began in October 2023, Navratilova criticized Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Prime Minister, and the militant group Hamas. In recent months, the Czech-American has spoken out against the belligerents.
On October 2, 2024, the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of Al Jazeera Investigations posted a short clip from an upcoming documentary about the war and videos posted by members of the Israeli forces on TikTok which have gone viral. Navratilova reshared the post, which has more than two million views at the time of writing.
"If pointing out this is wrong is antisemitic, then I don’t know what to ever say... This is wrong…," she tweeted.
Navratilova echoed British broadcaster Piers Morgan's sentiments while discussing the war earlier this year.
Martina Navratilova saw eye-to-eye with Piers Morgan on Israel's air strikes on a Rafah refugee camp
Shocked at Israel attacking a refugee camp in Rafah, the Palestinian city in the southern portion of the Gaza Strip, British broadcaster Piers Morgan took to X and said that despite his past backing of Israel's self-defense against militants, he could not defend such "horrific" acts. Martina Navratilova agreed with him.
"Right on Piers," she wrote.
Similarly, in December 2023, Navratilova questioned an Israeli diplomat about being silent on the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip in the aftermath of destructive warfare. On this occasion, the 18-time singles Major winner shared a clip from Piers Morgan Uncensored, a talk show where Morgan fielded several pointed questions on the Israel-Hamas war to Tzipi Hotovely, the Israeli ambassador to the UK.
Inexplicably, Hotovely remained tight-lipped when it came to answering the questions on the future of the Gaza Strip and its inhabitants. Instead, she talked about how Israel needs to defend itself from the brutality of Hamas. Navratilova took notice of the video and proceeded to share it, also adding the caption:
"No answer..."
Furthermore, in a separate post earlier this year, Navratilova condemned Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip after learning about the death and devastation they caused. The official X handle of the United Nations Geneva shared the post initially and featured Volker Turk, the UN Human Rights chief. In the video, Turk labeled the entire affair a "carnage".
Navratilova shared her thoughts on it while resharing the post, calling it "unacceptable" and a "genocide".
