When Roger Federer's kids reminded him that Rafael Nadal was World No.1 before an awards ceremony

Roger Federer is arguably the greatest athlete to have emerged from Switzerland. The 40-year-old has won the country's Sports Personality of the Year award a record seven times.

The last time he won the award was in 2017. During his acceptance speech, he shared a rather funny story about his kids' reaction to him winning the award.

According to Federer, when he told his children that he was going to an awards ceremony, they questioned how he could be winning prizes when Rafael Nadal was the World No. 1 at the time.

"After dinner, my kids asked me where I was going," Federer said. "I told them there is this awards Gala where I could win a prize. They replied: 'Isn't Rafa number 1?'"

2017 was a terrific season for Federer as he won two Grand Slams that year after missing the latter part of the 2016 season due to injury.

The Swiss maestro won his fifth Australian Open crown in 2017 by beating Rafael Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in a thrilling final. He also won a record eighth Wimbledon title, defeating Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 in the title clash. Federer did not drop a single set en route to his triumph at the grass-court Major. He finished the 2017 season with 54 wins out of 59 matches.

The Swiss was ranked No. 2 in the world at the time but reclaimed top spot in February 2018, shortly after winning his sixth Australian Open title.

Roger Federer's four children have taken an interest to tennis as per Mary Joe Fernandez, whose husband Tony Godsick is the Swiss' agent.

The former WTA top-5 player stated not long back that Roger Federer's children play tennis and one of them really loves the sport.

"All his children play tennis. One really loves it, which is so fun for him and his wife, Mirka. They love tennis so much, they're like, 'They have to play'. Finally, one of them is really showing big interest in it, so it's very very cool to see," Fernandez told the Holding Court with Patrick McEnroe podcast.
