US Open 2024: How much prize money did Emma Raducanu, Danielle Collins, Sloane Stephens, and Bianca Andreescu earn despite losing in first round?
Former Grand Slam champions Emma Raducanu, Sloane Stephens, Bianca Andreescu, along with world No. 11 Danielle Collins have crashed out of the 2024 US Open women's singles event in the first round. Despite a disappointing and early exit from the Major, the four players have secured a handsome amount of $100,000 each for their effort.
Collins, seeded the highest among the four, suffered a big upset as she lost to compatriot Caroline Dolehide 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 in the opening round. The 11th seed's game was littered with errors, including 11 double faults and a staggering 47 unforced errors.
Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion and 2018 French Open finalist, started brilliantly against Clara Burel in the first round as she dished out a bagel in the first set. Burel, however, staged an impressive comeback to complete a 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 win at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Andreescu faced a similar fate as Stephens, losing her opener to seed No. 5 Jasmine Paolini despite claiming the opening set. The 2019 champion of Flushing Meadows entered the main draw as a wildcard and surprised the in-form Paolini initially. However, she fizzled away in the following sets as the Italian closed out the match 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 49 minutes.
Raducanu was the last among these players to go out of contention in New York as Sofia Kenin overcame her 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 on Tuesday, August 27. Raducanu took the tennis world by storm when she won the 2021 US Open women's singles championship as a qualifier without dropping a set, but hasn't won another trophy since.
However, it isn't all over yet for Collins and Stephens as the two still have doubles duties to fulfill at the US Open. Collins has joined forces with Caroline Garcia in the women's doubles category and will face the all-American pair of Anna Sinclair Rogers and Alana Smith in the first round.
Stephens meanwhile has paired up with fellow American Ashlyn Krueger and they will face 11th seeded duo of Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzkova.
US Open becomes Grand Slam with highest prize money in 2024
The 2024 US Open has declared a record prize money purse of $75 million. It is higher than the amount either the Australian Open, the French Open, or Wimbledon offered to players competing in those events.
2024 US Open prize money distribution for singles competition:
The singles winners in Flushing Meadows are promised an award of $3,600,000 each, which happens to be more than what the respective champions received in Melbourne, Paris, and London in the 2024 season.
For comparison, Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka received cheques worth $2,135,606 at Melbourne Park, Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek received $2,679,708 each at Roland Garros, while Alcaraz and Barbora Krejcikova were rewarded $3,562,056 each at SW19 for their title-winning efforts.
