US Open 2024: Who are the Americans & Canadians who survived R1? Ft. Coco Gauff, Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton

Tennis at Flushing Meadows has taken exciting turns, with better-seeded players like Coco Gauff comfortably cruising into the second round alongside a few upsets. With the Canadian and American contingents sending their best players to the tournament, here are the ones who have managed to win the first round.

On the men's side, Alex Michelsen, Tommy Paul, Sebastian Korda, Taylor Fritz, Brandon Nakashima, Mitchell Krueger, Ben Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe play in the second round from the USA, while Gabriel Diallo is the only Canadian still alive in the competition.

On the women's side, Iva Jovic, Madison Keys, Peyton Stearns, Coco Gauff, Taylor Townsend, Varvara Lepchenko, Jessica Pegula, Sofia Kenin, Caroline Dolehide, and Ashlyn Krueger move to the second round. At the same time, no Canadian players could clear the round 1 barrier.

The American contingent has fared well at the US Open, with several American men making it to the second round. After defeating fellow American Eliot Spizziri in the first round in three sets, Alex Michelsen is set for a tough fixture against World No.1 Jannik Sinner in the second round. Tommy Paul, Sebastian Korda, and Mitchell Krueger also progress to the second round after defeating Lorenzo Sonego, Corentin Moutet, and Hugo Grenier, respectively.

Brandon Nakashima, Frances Tiafoe, and Ben Shelton have also made it to the next round after defeating Holger Rune, Aleksandar Kovacevic, and Dominic Thiem, respectively. Canada's Gabriel Diallo will also contest the third round after beating Jaume Munar in the first round.

The American women have fared well in the women's singles of the first round at Flushing Meadows. Iva Jovic defeated Magda Linette, Madison Keys got the better of Kateřina Siniaková, and Coco Gauff comfortably cruised past Varvara Gracheva into the second round. Amongst other American players, Jessica Pegula defeated fellow American Shelby Rogers and is set to face her country's Sofia Kenin in the second round.

Peyton Stearns, Taylor Townsend, Varvara Lepchenko, and Caroline Dolehide got the better of Lesia Tsurenko, Martina Trevisan, Brenda Fruhvirtová, and fellow American Danielle Collins, respectively, to play in the second round. Sofia Kenin caused an upset win over Emma Raducanu, and Ashlyn Krueger got the better of Zhang Shuai and made her way into the second round in New York. No Canadian women will be playing in the second round.
