Venus Williams 'not done yet' as American legend says no to retirement talks in big announcement
Venus Williams announced that she was not done with tennis and looks to make a comeback on tour with a tournament of her choice. In 2024, she has played only two tournaments, the Indian Wells and the Miami Open. However, she faced a first-round exit in both.
Williams has played less and less tennis in the past few years as she struggles with injury and age. Her last singles Grand Slam title came in 2008 (Wimbledon) and her last Major final came in 2017 (also Wimbledon). It has also been over three years since she passed the first-round barrier at a Grand Slam event.
However, the 44-year-old has not planned on retiring anytime soon. During her interview with The Irish News, Williams said she would pick and choose where she wanted to play next.
"I’m not done with the racket yet... At this point, it’s about picking and choosing places I want to be. Last year I really wanted to play in Miami – home – because I hadn’t played there in like five years," Venus Williams said.
"It’s nice to be in a place where I can pick and choose, but my game is always at a high level. Even if I’m not on tour, I always keep my game quite high," she added.

More recently, in an interview with CBS Mornings, Williams joined the three co-hosts to mark the 50th anniversary of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act. Partnering with SoFi, she discussed her campaign and shared financial lessons she’s learned over the years.
During the chat, one of the co-hosts pointed out that Williams said she felt "amazing" and asked her:
"Let's talk about feeling amazing because you're still working out, you're still training, you're still planning to go back on the court. What do you feel amazing about these days?"
The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion responded by highlighting her focus on self-care through movement, mindset, and diet, despite her busy life.
“You know, taking care of myself—that’s so important….I think we were talking before like how how busy we are. But taking those moments to just breathe, take care of yourself. Whether that’s moving, how you think, how you eat? So that’s like what I’m prioritizing these days,” Venus Williams said.
While she is not playing, Williams partners with several brands including Dove, Happy Viking, and Schwarzkopf Professional. She has appeared on several magazine covers including Harper's Bazar, Business Traveler, and Perfect Magazine. Notably, Williams has also released a book titled "STRIVE: 8 Steps to Find Your Awesome" which is a physical and mental health guidebook.
