Victoria Azarenka, Leylah Fernandez and others congratulate Ons Jabeur on Charleston Open triumph
Ons Jabeur won her first title of the 2023 season by winning the Charleston Open, where she beat Belinda Bencic 7-6(6), 6-4 in the final.
Jabeur and Bencic squared off in the title clash of the WTA 500 tournament for the second successive year and the Tunisian avenged her defeat from last year to win her fourth career title and second at the WTA 500 level. This was also the first time in her career that she won a WTA tournament without dropping a single set.
After the final, Jabeur shared images of herself with the Charleston Open trophy on social media, with her caption reading:
"Thank you #Charleston, Iām so happy with this title ā¤ļøšš¼ @belindabencic congrats on another spectacular final. My #TeamOJ I love you, you guys are the best."
Several tennis players congratulated Jabeur on her Charleston triumph by commenting on her post. While Victoria Azarenka used a bunch of clap and heart emojis, Leylah Fernandez simply wrote in French:
"Congratulations."
Other tennis players who congratulated Jabeur on winning the Charleston Open were Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Vasek Pospisil, Desirae Krawczyk, Harriet Dart and Christina McHale.
Jabeur's triumph in Charleston came after a string of disappointing performances earlier this season. The Tunisian currently holds a 9-4 win-loss record in 2023.
"I've been wanting to win this tournament for a long time" - Ons Jabeur
Ons Jabeur was delighted to win the 2023 Charleston Open and claimed that she wanted to triumph at the tournament for a long time. The Tunisian also said that the victory was a good way to start her clay-court season.
"I've been wanting to win this tournament for a long time. People have been amazing to me. So it's nice to have a great memory here in Charleston and this is a pretty good start to the clay season," she said after the final.
The 28-year-old added that winning the Charleston Open was a gift for her nephew, who was born just three weeks back.
"I'm very excited to go to Paris and celebrate with my family and with my little nephew, who was just born three weeks ago. This is his gift. He doesn't know it, but it's his gift," she added.
Jabeur's triumph in Charleston sees her move up a place, to fourth, in the WTA rankings.
