"Was the first time we argued... we just get annoyed" - Coco Gauff on spending too much time with mother
Coco Gauff’s close relationship with her father Corey has been well-documented but what fans often don’t realise is that she is very close with her mother Candi as well. The two often travel together for competitions and Candi does not waste any opportunity to cheer for her daughter.
Both Coco and Candi were spotted posing for pictures with the China Open trophy just a week ago. But tennis moves quickly and the American is already in Wuhan for another WTA 1000 event.
Speaking to the media during her pre-tournament press conference, Gauff was asked about her relationship with her family. The youngster was quick to describe the bond as something special.
"Yeah, I mean, both my parents are constant support all the time," Coco Gauff said. "My mom, it's just a motherly thing. There's nothing like a mother daughter relationship. Especially in swings like Asia where it maybe is more isolated than usual, we just play Uno lot."
Gauff recalled having an argument with her mother, but noted that it was their first. On other days, the youngster said, she turns to other mechanisms to address her frustration.
"We actually didn't argue. Yesterday I think was the first time we argued a little bit because we spend too much time with each other. It wasn't an argument, but we just get annoyed," she added.
"She's my biggest fan for sure" - Coco Gauff on her mother being a constant source of support
Coco Gauff has been travelling on the Tour since a tender age. She understandably needed someone to accompany her while she was a teenager.
Her mother Candi often filled that void as Gauff explained. She acknowledged that Candi had always been a source of constant support and helps her with everything, starting from packing her things for the next big event.
"Other than that, it's great to have my mom," Coco Gauff said in the same press conference. "She's my biggest fan for sure. Having one or both of my parents I think always makes the tournament easier. You don't have to take care of some things."
"She's always reminding, me, Do you have your headphones, change of shoes, clothes? Just things that moms, dads, they all do. I don't think I'll ever grow out of that as long as they're alive," she added.
Gauff, the fourth seed at this year’s Wuhan Open, will take on Viktoriya Tomova. The Bulgarian saved multiple match points against Ashlyn Krueger to eventually prevail.
