WATCH: Controversial scenes at US Open as Anna Kalinskaya protests against shocking double bounce contradicted by VAR in loss to Beatriz Haddad Maia

Anna Kalinskaya was left stunned when a controversial double bounce was not called at the 2024 US Open despite the use of video replay technology. The contentious incident took place during the Russian's third-round clash against Beatriz Haddad Maia.

After the North American hardcourt swing was marred by controversial umpiring decisions, players like Coco Gauff and Frances Tiafoe welcomed the use of the video replay system at the New York Major. However, despite the VAR technology, a contentious call took place during Kalinskaya and Haddad Maia's match.

As Anna Kalinskaya and Beatriz Haddad Maia battled it out for a place in the fourth round of the US Open, controversy erupted early in the opening set, with the Russian leading 2-0. As the Brazilian chased down a shot struck by Kalinskaya, she appeared to have returned the ball on a double bounce.

After the chair umpire awarded the point to the World No. 21, Kalinskaya called for the VAR technology to review the shot, which revealed that Haddad Maia had indeed failed to reach the ball before it bounced twice. However, the umpire ruled that the shot was legal and awarded the point to the Brazilian.

Anna Kalinskaya was visibly shocked by the decision and attempted to appeal to the chair umpire. Beatriz Haddad Maia, meanwhile, removed herself from the argument, choosing not to concede the point despite watching the replay.

However, Kalinskaya's protests were in vain, as the chair umpire upheld the call, leaving the Russian to walk back in disappointment.

Although Kalinskaya held a 2-0 lead before the controversy, she only won one more game as Haddad Maia clinched the opening set 6-3. The Brazilian then dominated the second to claim a 6-3, 6-1 victory and advance to the fourth round.
