WATCH: Daniil Medvedev celebrates in Cristiano Ronaldo fashion after defeating Fabian Marozsan to get through US Open 2R in day of upsets

Daniil Medvedev defeated Fabian Marozsan to advance to the third round of the 2024 US Open. Following the second-round win, the Russian brought out an iconic Cristiano Ronaldo celebration in the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Medvedev dominated from the outset, taking the first set 6-3 despite committing four double faults. The Russian carried the momentum to the second set, breaking the Hungarian six times to win 6-2. Both players battled hard in the third set, but Medvedev ultimately prevailed, edging it 7-6(5).

The World No. 5 fired 34 winners in the three-set match, securing a 1-0 head-to-head advantage over Marozsan following their first tour-level encounter. After securing the win, Medvedev gestured to the crowd to calm down, mimicking Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic 'calma' celebration from his Real Madrid days.

One of the most iconic moments of Ronaldo's 'calma' celebration came on April 12, 2012, when Real Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over Barcelona. The Portuguese performed the celebration after scoring a decisive second goal in the 73rd minute.

Although Medvedev mimicked Ronaldo’s signature move, he previously mentioned that Lionel Messi is his favorite player.

Following his second-round triumph, Medvedev acknowledged Marozan's impressive play, noting how well he hits the ball. The Russian added that he managed to stay solid throughout the match and was happy to advance to the next round.

Medvedev said in his on-court interview (via US Open):

“I knew that he (Marozsan) can play very well. From time to time, up and down, but when he’s up, he hits unbelievable. It’s tough to impose what you want to do. I was always looking to see what he’s doing on the court. I managed to stay really solid, and there were some great moments. I’m really happy to be through to the next round."

This is the seventh straight time the Russian has reached the third round at Flushing Meadows. He will face the 31st-seeded Flavio Cobolli in the third round of the New York Major. Cobolli defeated James Duckworth and Zizou Bergs to set up his first-ever meeting with Medvedev on the tour.

The winner of the match between Medvedev and Cobolli will face either Nuno Borges or Jakub Mensik in the fourth round of the US Open.
