"I've always been a Rafael Nadal fan" - Serena Williams explains why she named her dog after Spanish legend
During a press conference at Wimbledon in 2022, Serena Williams had kind words for Rafael Nadal, who had, at the time, won his 14th French Open title and 22nd Grand Slam title. Williams also opened up about why she named her pet dog after the Spaniard.
"He's done a lot in 2022. He's been busy. I've always been a Rafa fan. I named my dog after him. He's so cute. I miss the little guy. So obviously I'm always rooting for Rafa. So yes, he's been really inspiring in everything that he's done this year, and he has a lot more to do.” Serena Williams.
Both Williams and Nadal have dominated their respective tours this century. Williams won 23 Grand Slam titles before retiring in 2022 and Nadal has won 22 Major titles before he embraces retirement after the Davis Cup Finals in November. The duo have always had kind words for each other.
After Williams announced her retirement, Nadal said (via EuroSport):
“She is one of the greatest sports [people] of all time. I feel lucky to share a tour for a long period of time with her. Of course, from a selfish point of view it’s sad that she’s leaving the tour but, on the other hand, we can’t thank her enough for all the things that she did for our sport."
"I think she’s an amazing inspiration for a lot of people around the world and I think she deserves to choose whatever works for her better at this stage off her life. So I wish her all the best," he added.
Recently, Nadal also announced his retirement via a video on social media. However, Williams could not react to it due to a health condition she was suffering from.
