WATCH: Sloane Stephens delights fans by speaking Spanish at Merida Open 2023

Sloane Stephens impressed the crowd at the 2023 Merida Open by speaking Spanish, eliciting cheers and applause from the spectators.

Stephens triumphed over Russian tennis player Varvara Gracheva, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (5) at the 2023 Merida Open on Friday (February 24). The match lasted two hours and 46 minutes. The American will now face Italian tennis player Camila Giorgi in the quarter-finals,

In the post-match on-court interview, Stephens expressed her gratitude in Spanish, expressing her love for Mexico and thanking the crowd for their support.

"Te amo Mexico!! Muchas Gracias," Stephens said to the crowd.

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) shared a video of the 29-year-old speaking Spanish on their social media pages. Stephens shared the WTA video on her own handle, humbly admitting that enabled she was able to speak such fluent Spanish due to using the Duolingo language app.

Sloane Stephens will join the likes of Danielle Collins, Anastasia Potapova and Alycia Parks at the inaugural ATX Open in Austin, Texas, which will take place from February 27 to March 5.

The 2017 US Open champion has earned seven career titles, achieved a career-high ranking of World No. 3, and reached the finals of three other tournaments, including the French Open and the WTA Finals in 2018.

Stephens has cemented her place as a formidable force in the tennis world and her impressive record is a testament to her skill and determination.

At the start of the month, Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys faced off in an exciting exhibition match at the Dallas Open for the Women's Tennis Classic. Venus Williams and Danielle Collins were initially slated to compete in the tournament. However, Williams was forced to withdraw due to an injury that had also kept her out of the 2023 Australian Open.

Collins also had to pull out due to a scheduling conflict, leaving Stephens and Keys to take their place.
