WATCH: Steffi Graf hilariously declines surprise marriage proposal during Cluj exhibition, points to husband Andre Agassi as they partner up on court
Steffi Graf shared a brilliant response to a surprise marriage proposal from the audience during an exhibition match in Cluj, Romania. The German promptly pointed to her husband Andre Agassi as the duo teamed up on court, effectively discouraging the proposal.
Agassi and Graf have dusted their racquets off to join forces at a blockbuster exhibition event in Romania as part of the Cluj Sports Festival. The duo showcased their enduring tennis skills as they squared off against Simona Halep and Andrei Pavel at the BT Arena in Cluj-Napoca.
During the riveting doubles clash, a fan seized the opportunity to propose to Steffi Graf, causing the German to trip up over her service motion. The 55-year-old hilariously wagged her finger to decline the proposal and pointed to her husband Andre Agassi, who was standing just a few feet away on the court.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion is no stranger to receiving marriage proposals during her matches, famously encountering one during her semifinal clash at the 1996 Wimbledon Championships.
After a fan interrupted the German's service routine with a marriage proposal, Graf left the audience in stitches by asking:
"How much money do you have?"
Having lost that particular service game, the former World No. 1 later joked that she would have to consider asking for a divorce.
"I lost the game, so I think I'll ask for a divorce now," Steffi Graf said, as quoted by the New York Times.
"I’m not going to repeat what Steffi Graf said" - Iga Swiatek shared a hilarious response to fan's marriage proposal during San Diego Open 2022 final
Steffi Graf's iconic reply to the fan's marriage proposal served as a source of inspiration for Iga Swiatek when she faced a similar question during her title clash against Donna Vekic at the 2022 San Diego.
Swiatek cleverly shot down a marriage proposal from a fan after her victory, asserting that while she did not want to repeat Graf's remarks, her sentiments aligned with the German's.
"I'm not going to repeat what Steffi Graf said, but you probably know what she said," Swiatek said.
In an interview with Sport.pl after the incident, the Pole emphasized her right to take the proposal in jest and hoped that the fan in question wouldn't be too upset at not receiving a clear answer.
"I think, just like the people who say it, I have the right not to take it seriously. I hope that this gentleman did not later 'cry,' that I did not answer him seriously, that is, 'yes' or 'no,'" Iga Swiatek said.
