"What if Danielle Collins wins US Open? Is she done?" - Sam Querrey speculates possibility of American reconsidering retirement decision
Danielle Collins has had an impressive 2024 season so far, and former American tennis player Sam Querrey hasn't ruled out her chances of winning this year's US Open. While Collins has announced that she would retire from tennis, Querrey has speculated a possibility of reconsideration.
The current World No. 8 announced in January that she would retire at the end of the 2024 season. She has produced some impressive performances over the past few months, winning the Miami Open and the Charleston Open. These performances, among others, helped the 30-year-old return to the Top 10 of the WTA rankings.
While speaking on Tennis Channel along with Pam Shriver, Sam Querrey wondered whether Collins would retire if she won the US Open.
"What if she wins the US Open? Is she done? Then what?" Querrey speculated initially.
The Wimbledon 2017 semifinalist claimed that it would be a good way to go out and that Collins had a shot at winning the New York Major.
"It might be a good way to go out. She's playing amazing this year, she won Miami. She has proven herself that she can win these big events. So, why not win the US Open if you're her?" Querrey said.
"The only thing I have asked is people to respect my decision" - Danielle Collins feels disrespected when people ask her to reconsider retirement
Danielle Collins's retirement decision stems from her suffering from medical conditions plus her desire to start a family. In an interview with BBC, Collins opened up on the two chronic health conditions she suffers from, namely rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis.
She revealed that many people have asked her to reconsider retirement but she finds it hurtful that people do not accept her decision.
"I know there are a lot of great fans and people out there encouraging me to rethink things. But I have sometimes found it hurtful when people push back," Danielle Collins said.
"I've been very vocal about something that is deeply personal and that a lot of people do not want to talk about. The only thing I have asked is people to respect my decision," she added.
She also revealed that doctors have advised her to get pregnant soon because due to her conditions, she has a 'smaller window' to get pregnant.
Currently, Collins is delaying her return to tennis after the Paris Olympics. Several of her compatriots and Olympic teammates including Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Emma Navarro have begun their US Open series with the WTA 1000 event in Canada.
Collins is next expected to feature in the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, which begins next week.
