"When media 'experts' call me s**t, I take it as a bizarre compliment" - Holger Rune shrugs off backlash after US Open exit; shares inspiring message

Holger Rune has shared a statement shrugging off criticism after his early exit from the US Open. The Danish player lost in his first round contest against Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-1, 6-4

The 21-year-old had just 19 winners and 30 unforced errors, a mere 39 percent of first serves, and was 0-6 on break points. In 2024, Rune's form has taken a dip, with a second-round loss at the Australian Open, a fourth-round loss at the French Open and Wimbledon, and now a first-round loss at the US Open.

Following this upset, Rune shared a statement, responding to the backlash he received from his fans and media. He took to his X account and opened up about his achievements. By calling himself the 'highest ranked male' in his country, he also took a dig at the media.

"Sometimes the bumps on the road are painful and frustrating. But we all know there are no easy or fast way to fulfil our dreams," Holger Rune wrote. "Every experience is learning, that will make the foundation so strong that no one or nothing can break us in the end. I am not satisfied with my results, but still I have to remember I am 21, I am top 15 in the world , the highest ranked male ever in my county. So when media, “experts" and randoms call me shit, I take it as a bizarre compliment."
"They are expecting more from me, and faster . I too love when everything moves in F1 speed towards the goal, but life is not always like that. To every young person or player out there losing in sports or feeling like a failure, be strong, it’s part of the road to success. A certain amount of darkness is needed to enjoy the daylight."

Holger Rune shares comments on his US Open performance

Holger Rune, after his loss against Nakashima, took to his X account and posted an honest statement on his performance. He showcased disappointment towards himself by saying that he played "bad tennis."

"Big bummer yesterday💔, The best support, lots of happy tennis kids, perfect weather, perfect court and tournament and I played extremely bad tennis," Rune wrote.
"No offence to my opponent, but I managed only 39%!! first serves, tons of unforced errors, this is not what I or anyone should expect. I need to look into everything now. This is not satisfying for me or my fans. I will not let you down anymore."

Holger Rune reached the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters 2024 but fell short of qualifying for the final after losing to Frances Tifoe with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4).
