"Where is the dude that asked how did Barbora Krejcikova win Wimbledon?": Serena Williams' ex-coach fires back after Czech reaches WTA Finals SF
Barbora Krejcikova booked her place in the semifinals of the 2024 WTA Finals by beating Coco Gauff in straight sets. Former Serena Williams coach Rennae Stubbs was mightily impressed by the Czech's performance in Riyadh and made a bold prediction for her at the tournament.
Barbora Krejcikova qualified for the year-end championships mostly due to her triumph at this year’s Wimbledon. Seeded eighth, the Czech suffered a loss to Iga Swiatek despite leading by a set and double break. She recouped quickly and racked up a comfortable straight-set win against Jessica Pegula to get her campaign going.
With qualification into the WTA Finals semifinals within grasp, Krejcikova upped the ante against Coco Gauff. The Czech did enough to unsettle the American's rhythms and emerged victorious 7-5, 6-4. Krejcikova won 65% of points on her second serve and benefitted greatly from Gauff's 40 unforced errors.
The 28-year-old's performance at the WTA Finals amazed former doubles No. 1 Rennae Stubbs. The Aussie advised the other players at the season-ending tournament to be aware of the former Roland Garros champion's threat and pegged her to even win the tournament. Stubbs also took a shot at Krejcikova's critics who questioned her triumph at the 2024 Wimbledon Championship.
"I’m telling ya. When @BKrejcikova gets a roll on, look out!!!!! She’ll probably win the whole damn thing now. Also where is the dude that asked “how did Krejcikova win Wimbledon” at???" Stubbs tweeted.
Barbora Krejcikova to face Zheng Qinwen in WTA Finals 2024 SF
Barbora Krejcikova topped the Orange Group at the 2024 WTA Finals with two wins and will now face seventh seed Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals on November 8. Zheng also won two matches in her group, defeated Jasmine Paolini and Elena Rybakina, and lost to top seed Aryna Sabalenka.
Krejcikova and Zheng have faced each other once on the tour before. The Chinese No. 1 emerged victorious against the Czech in the final of the Zhengzhou Open last year. Zheng qualified for the WTA Finals for the first time in her career.
Meanwhile, Krejcikova has played in the WTA Finals an incredible six times in her career. Most of those appearances have been in doubles, with the Czech winning the WTA Finals doubles title alongside Katerina Siniakova in 2021. Her previous singles appearance at the WTA Finals came in 2021 as well.
