WTA Rankings update: Canadian Open runner-up Amanda Anisimova flies back into the top 50, new peaks for Emma Navarro, Taylor Townsend & Diana Shnaider
Amanda Anisimova's massive jump is the highlight of this week's WTA rankings. The American notched four wins over top-20 players at the Canadian Open to reach her maiden WTA 1000 final. She came up short against defending champion Jessica Pegula, losing to her 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
Nevertheless, it was the best week of Anisimova's comeback. Her run to the final has resulted in a huge jump of 83 spots to No. 49. She won't need to rely either on wildcards or protected ranking to enter tournaments anymore.
Emma Navarro made the semifinals of the Canadian Open, her first at a WTA 1000 tournament as well. She moved up a couple of places to No. 13, a new career high, and could soon crack the top 10 of the WTA rankings.
Diana Shnaider, who upset World No. 2 Coco Gauff en route to the Canadian Open semifinals, also reached a new career peak this week. She rose by four spots to No. 20 to continue her breakout season, in which she has already claimed three titles.
Taylor Townsend finally reached her first quarterfinal in singles on the WTA Tour at the Canadian Open. After falling shy so many times, the American got over the hump at last.
The American's run in Toronto pushed her up by 18 spots to a new career high of No. 53. Anna Kalinskaya (No.15), Moyuka Uchijima (No. 59), and McCartney Kessler (No. 100) are the other players to reach new career highs this week.
Iga Swiatek in no danger of conceding her spot atop the WTA rankings
Iga Swiatek didn't participate in the Canadian Open and lost 350 points that she was defending. It wasn't a big deal as she still has 10655 points to her name. It's unlikely that she will be replaced by anyone else atop the WTA rankings in the near future.
Swiatek has a massive lead over No. 2 Coco Gauff with 7633 points, and No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka with 7366 points. Both are defending some big points over the next few weeks.
Gauff is the defending champion in Cincinnati and at the US Open, while Sabalenka made the last four in the former event and was the runner-up in New York. Elena Rybakina and Jasmine Paolini remain steady at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively.
Jessica Pegula's successful title defense at the Canadian Open keeps her at No. 6 for another week, with Zheng Qinwen right behind her at No. 7. Danielle Collins dropped a couple of places to No. 10, which pushed Maria Sakkari and Barbora Krejcikova up a spot to No. 8 and No. 9 respectively.
